Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise volleyball dropped their match Friday night to West Virginia State University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-18). The Cavs (4-10, 1-2) recorded 51 digs and 37 assists in the match.
UVa-Wise was able to stay within striking distance of the Yellow Jackets for most of the first set, only down by two early in the set, 13-11. Following a Cavalier timeout, West Virginia State went on a 3-0 run to extend their lead, 17-12. Â The Cavs responded winning four straight points late in the set to cut the Yellow Jackets lead, 19-17. UVa-Wise continued to attack, but would narrowly fall to West Virginia State, 25-23.
West Virginia State went ahead early in the second set as the Yellow Jackets took a 6-1 lead to start the set. The Cavs managed to come back to get within two points of the Yellow Jackets, 10-8. West Virginia State was able to extend their lead, 18-12, before earning the victory in the second set, 25-17. The Cavs opened up the third set toggling the lead with the Yellow Jackets before West Virginia State took a 19-15 lead late in the set. The Yellow Jackets would maintain the lead and take the third set, 25-18.
Sophomore Briana Kerr and junior Kyra Jessee led the Cavaliers in digs with 14 and 13, respectively. Sophomore Morgan Milligan added seven digs and 18 assists for the Cavs while junior Ciara Kain posted 11 kills, two assists, and five digs in the match.
UVa-Wise will return to action tomorrow as they travel to Charleston, W. Va. to take on the University of Charleston in another conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
