ATHENS W.Va. - - Jeremiah Johnson's second interception of the game, a 36-yard interception return with 6:35 to play proved to be the only points of the game as Concord University upended UVa-Wise 7-0 at Callaghan Stadium Thursday night. The Mountain Lions forced four Cavaliers' turnovers and sacked quarterback Brycen Lee 10 times to earn their first victory of 2017.
UVa-Wise (2-1, 2-1 MEC) entered the game receiving votes in the latest AFCA Coaches' Poll but spent most of the night playing behind the chains due to 16 penalties that cost Dane Damron's squad 162 yards.
Concord (1-2, 1-2 MEC) posted just 131 offensive yards in the game while registering just seven first downs. However, punter Garrett Lee proved to be a weapon as he averaged 41.4 yards per punt while placing five of his nine punts inside the 20-yard line.
Lee's biggest punt of the game came when he sailed a punt out of bounds at the 18-yard line. Four plays later, Johnson picked off Lee (Mayo, Fla./Eastern Kentucky) and returned it for the game's only points.
Earlier in the game, the Cavs appeared to score when Von Purvis (Stafford, Va./North Stafford H.S.) scampered around left end for a touchdown. The play would not stand as UVa-Wise was called for a holding penalty. Two plays later, the scoring threat ended when Johnson picked off a pass in the end zone to end the threat.
Damron's squad would have another scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter but a fumble inside the five yard line would end the threat as Concord took over.
UVa-Wise had one final shot with less than two minutes to play but after picking up one first down, penalties once again set in and the drive stalled out resulting in the 7-0 loss.
It was the first time UVa-Wise has been shutout since Sept. 2015 when Notre Dame College posted a 42-0 win in South Euclid, Ohio.
Ed Kargbo (Springfield, Va./South Co. H.S.) led the Cavs' defense with seven tackles for a unit that limited the Mountain Lions to 131 yards of total offense.
