Cavs Split A Pair of One Run Games in Regular Season Finale

WISE - - UVa-Wise and visiting Concord split a pair of one-run games in the regular season finale Sunday at Stallard Field. The Cavaliers won game one 6-5 on a walk-off two-run single by junior Stuart Paz to cap a four-run seventh before the Mountain Lions outlasted the hosts 9-8 in 10 innings in the night cap. The doubleheader concludes the regular season for UVa-Wise while Concord will advance to next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament.

Concord (26-23, 19-13 MEC) took a 5-0 lead over the first five innings of the opener as Jordan Clark, Jake Divers and Brett Simmons each had an RBI in the fourth inning to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead.

An inning later, Chad Frazier belted a two-run homer to give the Mountain Lions a five-run cushion.

Freshman Trevor Nevill started the comeback for UVa-Wise (19-31, 13-19 MEC) in the sixth when his two-run double scored Paz and freshman Nate Thompson.

In the seventh, redshirt freshman Josh Haga singled to lead off the frame before back-to-back walks to sophomore Cal Bailey and freshman Tyler Blaum loaded the bases.

After two outs, Thompson singled through the right side of the infield to make it a 5-3 game. A batter later, sophomore David Thomas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to one.

Paz provided the walk-off win when he lined a single to left field allowing Thompson and Blaum to cross the plate for the decisive runs.

Paz led a 10-hit effort for the Cavaliers by going 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Thompson and Haga also had multi-hit games as each player finished with two hits.

Sophomore Kellen Larkin (2-1) picked up the mound win in relief as the right-hander tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

Game two saw the Cavaliers jump out to a six run advantage as Thomas, Paz and Blaum each had an RBI as part of a five-run first for Hank Banner's Club.

An inning later, Thomas cashed in his second RBI of the day to push the lead to 6-0.

In the top of the third, Frazier got the Mountain Lions on the board when he singled home Nathan Neff to cut the deficit to 6-1.

In the top of the fifth, Paul Williams knocked in Ryan Fralin before Neff scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-3.

The score would remain unchanged until the seventh when Trevor Wiersma doubled home Neff and Eric Webb had an RBI fielder's choice to make it a 6-5 game.

An Adrian Peralta solo homer tied it for Concord in the eighth only to see Haga belt a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame to push the Cavs back on top 8-6.

Unrelenting, Concord answered with a two-run single by Divers in the eighth before an error allowed the guests to win 9-8 in 10 innings.

The Cavs lined 10 hits for the second consecutive game as freshman Jordan Tuner, Thomas and Paz each picked up two hits in the season finale.
