WISE - - UVa-Wise overcame a six-run deficit to claim a 12-10 win in game one before Charleston scored twice in its final trip to the plate in the finale to earn a 5-4 win and earn a doubleheader split. With the split, Charleston remains two games up of UVa-Wise for third place in the Mountain East Conference Southern Division standings.
Charleston (23-17, 11-1 MEC) got off to a fast start in the opener. The Golden Eagles plated five runs on four hits, including a two-run double by Taylor Itnyre.
UVa-Wise (15-25, 9-13) began the comeback effort in the home half of the inning as freshman Nate Thompson lined a run-scoring double and junior Stuart Paz produced an RBI groundout to make a 5-2 contest.
An RBI single by Gianfranco Morello and a two-run single by Stuart Davis pushed the Golden Eagles' lead to six at 8-2 in the top of the second.
Again, the Cavaliers counterpunched. This time, UVa-Wise played long ball as Matthew Branham slugged a three-run homer and Thompson launched a solo shot to make it an 8-6 came moving to third inning.
Freshman reliever Will Stamper tossed a scoreless top of the third and the Cavalier offense continued to dent the scoreboard in the home half of the frame. Redshirt freshman Josh Haga lined a run-scoring double to left center allowing fellow redshirt freshman Trevor Nevill to scamper home.
With its lead cut to 8-7, Charleston plated two runs thanks to a wild pitch. Morello scored on the errant pitch before Colby Johsnon raced home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lee Carneal after advancing to third on the wild pitch.
It would be the only two runs Stamper would allow as the Lebanon, Va. native fanned four while walking one in five innings of work to run his record to 2-2 on the year.
Paz got the Cavs back within two with a run-scoring single in the fourth before freshman Tyler Blaum tied the game with a two-run single to knot the game 10-10.
David Thomas gave Hank Banner's club their first lead of the day with an RBI groundout in the sixth before a bases loaded walk from freshman Jordan Turner provided the winning margin of 12-10.
UVa-Wise lined 13 hits in the game one win as Thompson finished a triple shy of the cycle to spearhead the offensive effort. Turner, Blaum and Haga added two hits each in the win.
Game two saw the Cavaliers take a 1-0 lead in the home second without the benefit of a hit. Paz walked to lead off the frame before Nevill walked on a 3-2 pitch to put runners on first and second with nobody out.
A throwing error by Davis would allow Paz to race home for the first run of the contest.
Charleston would knot the game in the top of the third when Justin Mixon would score on a passed ball.
The score would remain unchanged until the fourth inning when freshman Dante Salerno gave UVa-Wise a three-run lead with a two-out bases clearing double.
After Thompson recorded the first out of the frame, defensive miscues began to wreak havoc on UVa-Wise.
An error would allow Morello to reach base before Carnell blasted a two-run homer to left centerfield. Davis would then reach base on an error before Greg Duncan would enter the game and get the next two hitters out to preserve a 4-3 lead.
After the Cavs failed to score in the home half of the sixth, miscues arose in the top of the seventh.
A squibber off the bat of Jeff Somuk went for a base hit before a throwing error advanced him to second. Eric Hunt would then try to advance Somuk to third on a bunt, Hunt would lay down a bunt to third base line and would reach base on UVa-Wise's second error of the frame. The error would allow Somuk to score and send Hunt to third.
Hunt would eventually score what would prove to be the winning run when Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give the visitors a 5-4 lead.
A one-out double by Branham would put the winning run at the plate for UVa-Wise in the home half of the frame but Brandon Harris would retire the next two hitters to record his fourth save of the season.
The two teams will be back at it Monday in a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m.
