Men’s Tennis Season Comes to Close at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise men's tennis team saw its 2016-17 season come to an end Saturday afternoon at West Virginia Wesleyan as the visiting Cavaliers (4-15, 1-6 MEC) were blanked 9-0 by the host Bobcats (12-6, 5-1 MEC). Ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, West Virginia Wesleyan swept both doubles and singles play in the Mountain East Conference road matchup after an hour rain delay.

UVa-Wise could not win more than four games in any doubles match with the No. 9 regionally ranked Bobcat duo of Nathan Sabate and Ferran Berga defeating juniors Andrii Rutnytskyi (Odessa, Ukraine) and Viktor Tunnikov (Kharkiv, Ukraine) 8-4 at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, junior Christopher Armistead (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman Josh McFadden (Newport News, Va.) were handed a 8-2 loss by West Virginia Wesleyan's Pierre-Olivier Bedard and Pedro Nassar. The freshmen pair of Daniel Laughlin (Bristol, Va.) and John Hamilton (Wise, Va.) took an 8-1 defeat at third doubles against the Bobcats' Marc Van Den Boom and Thomas McIntosh.

Playing eight-game pro sets in singles play as well due to the weather, the Cavs were competitive in a pair of matches but could not find the win column. McFadden had the closest match at No. 4 singles where he came up just short in a 9-7 battle with Anthony Rames of West Virginia Wesleyan. At the top singles spot, Rutnytskyi took four games off of the Bobcats' Alexander Lyudinovskiy but fell 8-4.

Armistead was defeated 8-2 by West Virginia Wesleyan's McIntosh at No. 3 singles, while Hamilton dropped an 8-1 decision to the Bobcats' Rodrigo Lehmann Michael at the sixth position. West Virginia Wesleyan scored a pair of 8-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles as Timothy Stephens topped Tunnikov at the second spot and Bedard knocked off Laughlin at fifth singles.

With the loss UVa-Wise will miss out on the six-team MEC Tournament field after finishing seventh in the league standings.
