WISE - - Sophomore Kristin Gobbi tied her own school record with six goals as UVa-Wise overcame an early 3-1 deficit to post a 17-5 non-conference win over Tennessee Wesleyan at Carl Smith Stadium Wednesday evening.
Tennessee Wesleyan (8-4) scored three of the first four goals of the game as Jasmine Hickman registered three points off two goals and an assist.
From there, it was all downhill for the visitors as UVa-Wise (7-3) countered with nine consecutive goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead.
During the stretch, Gobbi netted three of her game-high six goals while freshman Jesse French scored all four of her goals in the game to aid the cause.
The Bulldogs would receive a goal from Sydney St. Clemmons only to see junior Hannah Marshall score unassisted to send the Cavaliers to intermission leading 11-4.
Freshman Ashley Wells would score off an Annie Hanson assist to give UVa-Wise its biggest lead of the day at 12-4 with 28:48 to play before Lauren McHugh cut the margin to seven two minutes later.
It would be as close as Tennessee Wesleyan would get over the remainder of the day as Gobbi would score three consecutive goals after assisting on a goal by McKayla Grasham to make the score 16-5 with 8:40 remaining.
Wells would tack on the team's 17th goal of the day with 4:35 to play to provide the winning margin of 17-5.
UVa-Wise goalie Melanie Reilly added a game-high seven groundballs to her 12 saves while Wells finished with seven points off of four goals.
Grasham collected a team-high five draw controls while four different Cavs finished with a pair of caused turnovers in the win.
Gobbi has now scored 14 goals in the last three games, including a pair of six-goal performances during the stretch.
Hickman tied Reilly for game-high groundball honors with seven while finishing with six draw controls and three points to lead Tennessee Wesleyan.
Due to its canceled contest at Ohio Valley University, UVa-Wise will not play again until April, 7 at the University of Charleston. It will be the Mountain East Conference opener for both schools. First draw from Charleston, W.Va. is set for 6 p.m.
