CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - Visiting UVa-Wise trailed for the bulk of Friday's Mountain East Conference opener at the University of Charleston but, Meghan Dennehy's club led when it mattered most as Hannah Marshall's game-winning goal in overtime propelled the guests to an 11-10 triumph.
UVa-Wise (8-3, 1-0 MEC) trailed 10-9 with less than a minute to play when freshman Jesse French scored her third goal of the game to force overtime.
Less than a minute into the extra session, Marshall sent the Cavaliers home victorious when she found the back of the net to complete the comeback.
Charleston (3-8, 0-1 MEC) took a 10-8 lead with 6:45 to play when Aryanna Jones scored unassisted.
The score would remain unchanged until the 2:45 mark when Ashley Wells' goal got UVa-Wise within one.
Neither team led by more than two goals throughout the game and the Golden Eagles led from the 13:19 point of the first half until French's game tying goal with less than a minute to play.
Emilly Henneberry and Marshall added two goals each to join French as Cavs with multiple goals in the league opener. Sydney Steinberg posted a team-high four groundballs while Rachel Cole led the team with three draw controls.
It was UVa-Wise's second overtime win of the season and improved the team to 6-2 on the road.
Next up, Dennehy's club will battle Wheeling Jesuit University next Saturday at Carl Smith Stadium. First draw is set for 12 p.m.
