Young Harris Holds off UVa-Wise 13-10

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - - Young Harris opened the game with four consecutive goals and was able to hold off a second half flurry to claim a 13-10 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over visiting UVa-Wise Sunday.

Young Harris (6-6) started fast as Nicole Kernohan scored off a Leigh Anne Turner pass at the 27:10 mark of the opening half. It would be the first of four goals for the Mountain Lions in the game's first seven minutes as the hosts took a 4-0 lead.

UVa-Wise (6-3) answered with back-to-back goals from sophomore Kristin Gobbi and freshman Ashley Wells.

Kernohan's second goal of the game pushed the lead to 5-2 with 19:49 to play in the half only to see Wells counter with her second goal to again get the Cavs within two at 5-3.

Young Harris would score three of the first half's final four goals to take an 8-4 lead to intermission.

The Mountain Lions strong play would continue over to the opening minutes of the second half as Sarah Bialecki would score a pair of goals to give her club its biggest lead of the day at 10-4 with 23:29 to play.

Refusing to quit, Meghan Dennehy's squad battled back. Freshman Jesse French scored off a Sydney Steinberg pass to make the lead 10-5 at the 21:52 mark before unassisted goals from Hannah Marshall and Steinberg had UVa-Wise within three at 10-7 with 12:36 showing on the clock.

Forty-three seconds later Marshall assisted on a Gobbi goal to have the Cavs within two for the first time since mid-way through the first half.

A physical contest, the two schools were assessed a combined six yellow cards, including four in the second half but, only once did a team score a woman-up goal when French cut the Mountain Lions lead to 10-9 mid-way through the second half.

Kendra Parenteau and Kernohan would end the rally with back-to-back unassisted goals to give Young Harris a 12-9 advantage with 7:12 to play.

Marshall would get UVa-Wise back to within two with 1:22 to play only to see Erika Cross score unassisted with 40 ticks to play to provide the final margin of 13-10.
