INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - Amiea Summers made just one basket in Thursday's game but it was the biggest bucket of the game as the guard stole the ball and raced the length of the floor for a layup with 0.2 seconds remaining to propel West Virginia State to a 77-75 Mountain East Conference win over UVa-Wise at the Walker Convocation Center.
UVa-Wise (19-10, 14-7 MEC) was on the cusp of putting the game away late in the fourth quarter following a basket by senior Makenzie Cluesman to make the score 71-65 with 5:29 to play. The opportunity would go for naught as the Cavaliers would be unable to score on their next three possessions allowing the lead to slip to 71-70.
West Virginia State (13-14, 11-10 MEC) would tie the game with 25 seconds to play when Aurreshae Hines drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 75-75.
Coach Kristin Kunzman would call timeout to set UVa-Wise up for one final shot but, the shot would never happen as Summers' late game heroics gave the Yellow Jackets the victory.
One could argue the game was an assortment of missed chances for both teams as West Virginia State had an opportunity to put the visitors away early.
Poor shooting from UVa-Wise allowed West Virginia State to jump out to a 20-11 after one period. Cavaliers made just four of 18 field goal attempts while going 0-6 from beyond the arc.
The Yellow Jackets received eight points each from Jasmine Davis and Hines in the quarter as the team connected on 46.7 of their field goal attempts in the period.
The tide turned in the second period as UVa-Wise senior Taylor Sandidge erupted for seven points and Allison Ball made a trio of shots to net six in a period that saw the Cavs outscore the Yellow Jackets 24-16.
Aggressive on the offensive glass, UVa-Wise grabbed 12 offensive rebounds in the first half and entered intermission trailing by just one at 36-35.
The Cavs surged ahead at the 7:35 mark of the third period on a 3-pointer by Cluesman to make the score 44-42. It would be part of an 18-8 spurt that saw the guests take a 59-50 lead with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
West Virginia State would close the period on an 8-0 run to send the game to the final 10 minutes with UVa-Wise leading 59-58.
The Cavs would again seem to be on the verge of closing out the game as a pair of baskets by Senior Kayla Carey and a jumper by Kayla Mullins made it a 67-60 score with under seven minutes to play.
Coach Charles Marshall's team would put together the game's final run as the Yellow Jackets closed the game on a 17-8 run to claim the win.
Cluesman recorded a double-double in the loss by scoring 14 points and handing out 10 assists. Carey added 14 points and six rebounds while Sandidge netted 13 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes of action before fouling out.
Hines led all players with 27 points while Shealyn Shaffer added 17 points and Davis posted 12 in the win.
