Senior Trio Leads Cavs to Victory in Home Finale

WISE - - Makenzie Cluesman made five 3-pointers to establish a new single-season UVa-Wise record with 84 in a season while fellow senior Kayla Carey turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers completed a season-series sweep of Concord with a 92-53 win at the Prior Center Saturday. Cluesman finished with a game-high 23 points while fellow senior and backcourt mate Taylor Sandidge added 20 points in her final home game.

UVa-Wise (20-10, 15-7 MEC) started fast and never looked back as Kristin Kunzman's team led wire-to-wire en route to clinching the third seed in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament.

The Cavaliers shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the opening quarter as Carey scored nine of her 11 points in the period. UVa-Wise began the game on an 11-4 run as the senior trio of Cluesman, Carey and Sandidge combined for all 11 of the points.

Concord (7-21, 5-17 MEC) never recovered as the Mountain Lions fell behind by as many as 14 points in the first 10 minutes.

By the latter stages of the second quarter, the contest was effectively over. A layup by Cluesman made the score 44-22 with 2:46 to play in the half as the Cavs limited the Mountain Lions to 22.2 percent shooting in the quarter.

Holding a 50-29 lead at intermission, UVa-Wise blew the doors off in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 40 when sophomore Dakotah Turner finished off a traditional 3-point play to make it a 73-33 game with 34 seconds to play in the period.

The lead would not get smaller than 36 at any point in the fourth quarter as 11 different Cavs scored in the victory.

Alexis Lowery led the Mountain Lions with 21 points but it would be far from enough as the visitors turned the ball over 19 times which led to 20 UVa-Wise points.

Cluesman added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals while Sandidge posted five rebounds and four assists to her 20 points.

UVa-Wise finished with 11 made 3-pointers while making 15 of 16 free throw attempts in the victory.

The win was the 20th of the season for UVa-Wise marking the first time the program has reached the 20-win plateau since the 2005-2006 season.

Kunzman's crew will play at 2:15 p.m. Thursday against West Virginia State in the quarterfinals of the 2017 MEC Tournament inside the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va.
