Baseball Drops Series Opener at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Senior outfielder Ryan Addington registered five hits, scored four times, collected 14 total bases and knocked in a Southern Athletic Conference 10 runs to aid Carson-Newman to an 18-5 win over UVa-Wise at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex Friday.

Carson-Newman (2-3) got off to its fast offensive start in the bottom of the first when Addington led off the game with a triple. Two batters later, he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cade Snapp to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

UVa-Wise (3-2) had missed an opportunity to take an early lead when the Cavaliers had runners on the corners with one out but Eagles' pitcher Greg Valentine induced an inning-ending double play to end the threat in the top of the first.

The score would remain 1-0 until the home third when Carson-Newman put the game away with a seven-run inning. Addington blasted an opposite field grand slam for four of the runs while Snapp added an RBI double in the big frame. The two other runs came on an error by the Cavaliers and a wild pitch.

The visitors responded with three runs in the top of the fourth thanks to three RBI hits by freshman. Hoover, Ala. native Trevor Nevill knocked in the team's first run of the day on a double before fellow Leesburg, Va. product Joey Skov singled up the middle for the second run of the inning. UVa-Wise plated its third run of the frame when Mechanicsville, Va.'s Tyler Blaum plated Nevill on a run-scoring hit.

Hopes of a comeback would be short lived as a six-run home half of the third made the score 14-3. Addington belted his second grand slam of the day in the inning while Snapp added a two-run homer to account for the six runs.

Carson-Newman continued its offensive onslaught with three more runs in the fifth inning when Addington, Snapp and Paul Kirby produced RBI hits.

UVa-Wise picked up a run in the top of the eighth when senior Vinny Kuchenbuch homered down the left field line.

The Eagles responded with a run of their own on Addington's fifth hit and 10th RBI of the game.

The Cavs picked up their final run of the day when freshman Dante Salerno knocked in sophomore Cal Bailey.

Valentine got the win by tossing 3 2/3 innings of relief. The sophomore allowed three runs and struck out four to improve to 1-0 on the year.

UVa-Wise hurlers allowed 15 walks and hit two batters while allowing 15 hits in the series opening loss.

Kuchenbuch was the only Cav to have a multi-hit performance as the Riner, Va. native finished 2-4 with a pair of runs scored.

The series concludes with a nine inning game and a seven inning game tomorrow. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m.
