Cavalier Women Fall at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Glenville State built a 59-35 halftime lead to cruise to its sixth consecutive Mountain East Conference win, 107-77, over visiting UVa-Wise at the Waco Center Saturday. Kristin DesRocher scored 22 points to lead a group of five Pioneers in double figure scoring while Paris McLeod netted 19 points and a game-high five steals in the win.

UVa-Wise (2-7, 1-5 MEC) started the game with a 10-5 run as freshman Hanna Oliver and junior Ashley Cullen each made a 3-pointer to help the guests get off to a good start.

The success was short lived as Glenville State (8-1, 6-0 MEC) finished the quarter 25-7 run to take command of the contest. Kim Stephens' squad made 45.8 percent of their shots in the first 10 minutes while canning four 3-pointers.

Glenville State's pressure reached a boiling point for UVa-Wise as the Cavs turned the ball over 20 times in the first half. The lead ballooned to 25 points when McLeaod picked off a pass and assisted on an Emily Stoller bucket with 4:43 to play in the half.

The Cavs held the Pioneers to 18 third quarter points but would be unable to get the lead within 20 points at any point in the second half.

Junior Dakotah Turner provided a bright spot in the fourth quarter as the forward scored a career-high 12 points in the final 10 minutes. Freshman Hanna Oliver made five 3-pointers as the Woodbridge, Va. product turned in a season-best 17 points.

Glenville State attempted 90 field goals in the game compared to 59 for UVa-Wise. The Cavs did "outshoot" the Pioneers as the visitors made 50.8 percent of their field goal attempts while the hosts made 45.6 percent of their attempts.

UVa-Wise will return to play next Saturday at Lees-McRae College for a non-conference tilt. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
