BANNER ELK, N.C. - - Host Lees-McRae College outscored UVa-Wise 27-12 in the third quarter before holding off a late Cavalier rally to score an 84-79 non-conference women's basketball victory at Williams Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Lees-McRae (3-5) used six made 3-pointers in the third quarter to turn a 42-37 deficit to a 64-51 lead late in the third quarter.
UVa-Wise (2-8) began its comeback bid on the final bucket of the period when junior Ashley Cullen drained a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10 going to the fourth period.
Freshman Bianca Lockamy and sophomore Cynita Webb help the guests inch closer throughout the period. Webb netted nine of her career-high 21 points in the quarter while Lockamy scored seven of her 10 points in the stretch.
The Cavs would get to within one possession on three separate occasions but would be unable to tie the game as the Bobcats made 11-of-15 free throws to seal the win down the stretch.
Freshman Hanna Oliver netted 11 points while making a trio of 3-pointers to join Webb and Lockamy in double-figure scoring. Ten UVa-Wise players scored in the game but the team was unable to overcome Lees-McRae's 14-for-27 shooting from beyond the arc.
Brea Forbes led the Bobcats with 25 points while Markia Stacey chipped in 24 points.
UVa-Wise will return to action at home Tuesday when King University visits the Prior Center in a 2 p.m. tip.
