Late Fourth Quarter Run Propels Cavs by Lady Bobcats

WISE - - UVa-Wise received a season-high 10 points from freshman Ada Stanley off the bench while junior Cynita Webb turned in her fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers to a 54-47 Mountain East Conference victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at the Prior Center Wednesday.

West Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 3-2 MEC) took its first lead of the fourth quarter with 5:59 to play when Alexa Szelong canned a jumper to make the score 40-39.

The two schools would trade the lead back-and-forth over the next minute before a 3-pointer from junior Ashley Cullen put UVa-Wise (2-6, 1-4 MEC) in front for good. Cullen's long range shot made the score 44-42 with 5:16 to play and started a 13-5 run by the Cavs to end the contest.

Neither team shot particularly well in the game, the Bobcats made just 29.9 percent of their shot attempts while UVa-Wise connected on 35.7 percent of its attempts. Wesleyan's shooting woes were magnified from the 3-point line as the team made just 2-of-15 shots from beyond the arc.

Webb dominated the offensive glass, the Virginia Beach, Va. product collected six offensive boards to aid her team to 13 second chance points in the win.

Webb's board work was just one of several impressive performances on the glass. Freshman Hanna Oliver grabbed a season-best eight rebounds while Stanley (7) and Cullen (9) also established new high water marks in the rebounding column.

The Cavs got off to a fast start by jumping out to a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter. UVa-Wise made 7-of-16 field goal attempts in the first 10 minutes as Stanley and Bianca Lockamy netted four points each in the period. A big reason for the early success was the team's ability to record second chance points as Elise Clyburn's team grabbed five offensive rebounds and turned the extra opportunities into six points.

Wesleyan closed the gap to 25-21 at intermission by forcing UVa-Wise turnovers. The Bobcats forced the Cavs to commit seven turnovers in the second quarter and turned the mistakes into six points. Vicky Bullet's team also had its strongest rebounding quarter of the game with six offensive rebounds. Tyra Hughes scored five of her seven points in the quarter; the guard entered the game averaging 16 points but was limited to 3-of-14 shooting in the seven-point outing.

The visitors began the second half with an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the night. Szelong and Stacey Remer made back-to-back buckets to knot the score at 25-25 with 9:35 to play in the quarter before a bucket by Mari Stewart and two free throws by Summer Matlack sandwiched a layup by Webb to make the score 29-27 Bobcats.

UVa-Wise responded with an 8-0 run to seemingly take control of the game. Webb scored four of her 10 points in the stretch as her team maintained an eight point lead going to the final quarter.

Szelong's bucket capped a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter to give her team their first lead of the fourth quarter setting the stage for the Cavs' game-closing run.

It was UVa-Wise's ninth consecutive victory over West Virginia Wesleyan since the formation of the MEC. The Cavs have yet to lose to the Bobcats in women's basketball.

Oliver made a game-high three 3-pointers to score a game-high 12 points to join Webb and Stanley in double-figure scoring. The Cavs finished with a +13 advantage in rebounding at 52-39.

The win marked the first conference win in the coaching career of Clyburn as her team improved to 2-1 inside the Prior Center.

Next up, UVa-Wise will play league leader Glenville State at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the Waco Center in Glenville, W.Va.
