WISE - - Visiting University of Charleston limited UVa-Wise to 23.1 percent shooting while going 13-for-15 from the charity stripe to improve to 4-0 in Mountain East Conference play with a 54-41 women's basketball victory at the Prior Center Saturday.
Charleston (5-2, 4-0 MEC) used a 26-to-10 run to close the opening half to take a 26-19 lead to intermission. The Golden Eagles received nine points each from Octavia Loll and Brooklyn Pannell in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors scored 12 points off of nine turnovers by the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise (1-6, 0-4 MEC) began the game on a 9-0 run but would be unable to continue the momentum as the hosts managed just four made field goals in the second quarter. The offensive woes were highlighted by the team's inability to hit from long range; UVa-Wise was 0-for-5 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
Charleston picked up its defensive intensity in the third quarter as UVa-Wise shot just 10.5 percent from the field in the quarter as the team made just two of 19 field goal attempts.
While the Golden Eagles defense was clamping down, Charleston's offense was doing just enough to keep the Cavs at arm's length. Pannell added five points in the period as she went on to score a game-high 16 points.
Pannell would give her club their biggest lead of the day when she canned a jumper to begin the fourth quarter to make the score 41-28.
The Cavs would put up one final rally as freshman Bianca Lockamy drilled a 3-pointer before sophomore Cynita Webb made back-to-back buckets to make the score 41-35 with 7:12 remaining.
It would be as close as UVa-Wise could get, Charleston finished the game on a 13-6 run to remain undefeated in league play and score the 54-41 win.
Adalmaryz Rivera – Gomez and Webb led UVa-Wise with 10 points while Alle Moore led all players with 11 rebounds while Webb added nine rebounds in the loss.
UVa-Wise will return to action Wednesday when West Virginia Wesleyan visits the Prior Center in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
