INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - West Virginia State closed Wednesday's game on a 34-13 scoring run to overcome a two-point halftime deficit en route to a 74-51 Mountain East Conference women's basketball over UVa-Wise at the Doris and Walter Johnson Arena.
West Virginia State (2-4, 2-1 MEC) shot a blistering 57.1 percent from the field in the third quarter as the hosts canned a quartet of 3-pointers in the period to turn a 32-30 deficit in to a 61-46 lead after 30 minutes of play.
UVa-Wise (1-5, 0-3 MEC) turned the ball over 25 times in the loss as the hosts turned the mistakes into 18 points. The Cavaliers mustered just five fourth quarter points as any hopes of a comeback were quickly vanished.
The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to as many as 27 points with 4:14 to play as reigning MEC Player of the Week, Shea Hines led the team with a game-high 17 points.
The Cavs fell behind by nine points in the opening half but battled back to take the two point halftime advantage. Freshman Hanna Oliver scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the half.
UVa-Wise had its last lead with 9:01 to play in the third quarter when freshman Bianca Lockamy made a jumper to make the score 34-33. The Cavs would have one stretch in the second half where the team made just 2-of-16 field goal attempts as the Yellow Jackets took control of the contest.
UVa-Wise made just 4-of-22 attempts from beyond the 3-point line while West Virginia State countered with eight made triples.
Kim Richburg came off the bench to record a double-double for the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jasmine Davis made a trio of 3-pointers en route to 13 points to round out double figure scoring for West Virginia State.
Alle Moore came a point shy of her first double-double of the season as she grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss. Cynita Webb led all players with 11 rebounds, the sophomore added seven points on 3-of-4 shooting for UVa-Wise.
The Cavs will be back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday when the team faces the University of Charleston at the Prior Center.
