BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - Cavalier volleyball dropped a conference road match against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday, 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-13, 25-13). After falling in the first set, the Cavs (5-19, 1-9) won a close second set but were unable to sustain momentum as they fell to the Bobcats (9-15, 4-6).
West Virginia Wesleyan took an early 7-2 lead in the first set to start the match. The Lady Bobcats continued to play strong throughout the set as they earned a 17-8 advantage over the Cavaliers. Wesleyan would outlast UVa-Wise in the first set, 25-11.
The Cavs began to get in a rhythm going into the second set, only down three points to start, 8-5. The Lady Bobcats went on a 3-0 run later in the set before a UVa-Wise timeout. UVa-Wise responded winning four straight points. The Cavs managed to come back to tie the set 20-20. Both teams continued to battle as the Cavaliers took a two point lead over the Lady Bobcats, 24-22, before UVa-Wise won the set, 25-23.
West Virginia Wesleyan opened the third set with an 8-3 lead, forcing a Cavalier timeout. The Lady Bobcats did not let up as they extended their lead to 19-9 over the Cavs. Wesleyan would take the third set, 25-13. UVa-Wise was unable to come back in the fourth set as the Lady Bobcats registered an attack percentage of .250, earning a 25-13 victory over the Cavaliers.
Junior Ciara Kain posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Junior Eustaica Smith recorded 11 kills and three digs alongside a .360 attack percentage. Sophomore Briana Kerr tallied 18 digs while fellow sophomore Morgan Milligan registered a double-double with 24 assists and 13 digs.
UVa-Wise volleyball will take on Glenville State College on the road tomorrow at 1 p.m.
