Football Looks to Stay Unbeaten at Home Saturday

WISE - - Undefeated at home, UVa-Wise will look to go 4-0 at Carl Smith Stadium when the team entertains the University of Charleston Saturday.  Overall, the Cavaliers are 4-3 while the Golden Eagles enter the contest with a 2-4 mark.

UVa-Wise will be looking to rebound from a 10-7 setback to West Virginia Wesleyan. In the loss, the Cavaliers' defense essentially did not allow a point. The Bobcats kicked a 36-yard field goal after intercepting a pass on the Cavs' 31-yard line before returning a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown for their other points of the game. Overall, Wesleyan posted just 275 yards of total offense while turning the ball over twice in the win.

Dane Damron's squad had opportunites in the contest, a 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked in the third quarter before a Von Purivs touchdown run cut the lead to three. Late in the game, the Cavs had the ball with just over two minutes to play but the Bobcats' defense forced a turnover on downs to seal the win.

Most recently, Charleston knocked off Wesleyan 15-7 on Oct. 7. It halted a three-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles who enter this week averaging 18.8 points per game. Like UVa-Wise, Charleston relies on its defense. Pat Kirkland's club leads the MEC and ranks 10th nationally in total defense at 274.3 yards allowed per contest. Since allowing 51 points in a week one loss at West Virginia State, Charleston's defense is allowing just 12 points per game over the last five games. During the stretch of solid defensive play, opponents have failed to crack 10 points on three ocassions.

On offense, Charleston is led by its quarterback Mason Olszewski who leads the team with 373 rushing yards and five touchdowns. As a passer, Olszewski is completing 72 percent of his passes but, the signal caller is averaging just 108.7 passing yards per game.

UVa-Wise's defense has been racking up its sack totals recently. The Cavs are tied for 10th among all NCAA Division II schools with 23 sacks. UVa-Wise has collected at least three sacks in each of the last two games, including five in its most recent home game against Urbana University. Senior Ben Funny has led the sack parade as the Woodbridge, Va. product has claimed three of his five sacks over the last two weeks. Linebacker Donavan Montague leads the team with 5.5 sacks to rank sixth in the conference.

Montague and Funny will join Charleston's Jalen Nelson (second) and Khazin Daniels (fourth) as members of the MEC's top 10 sack leaders playing in Saturday's contest.

Following the game, UVa-Wise will hit the road for two weeks before returning home on Nov. 11 to face nationally ranked Shepherd University.
