Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – UVa-Wise volleyball fell in a pair of non-conference matches Friday at the West Liberty University/Wheeling Jesuit University Invitational in West Liberty, West Virginia. The Cavaliers (0-11) were defeated by Clarion University in straight sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-19) this morning before Seton Hill University handed UVa-Wise a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-18) loss Friday evening.
In the morning match against Clarion, the Cavs were held to a .000 attack percentage and were only able to manage 21 kills, while the Golden Eagles (5-4) hit .233 and collected 32 kills. Clarion recorded 11 aces and eight blocks, compared to three aces and just one block by UVa-Wise.
Despite an early 8-5 lead and later an 11-10 advantage in the opening set, the Cavs quickly found themselves down 19-11 after nine-consecutive points won by the Golden Eagles. UVa-Wise would only win four more points in the set as Clarion took the first set by a score of 25-15. After the Cavs tied up the score at 10-10 in set No. 2 the Golden Eagles went on a tear, winning 15 of the next 19 points in order to claim a 25-14 set win. Clarion did not stop there and jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in what proved to be the final set. UVa-Wise made a furious comeback and got within three at 22-19, but that would be as close as the Cavs would get before the Golden Eagles won the next three points to clinch the match.
Sophomore right side hitter
Amanda Auxier (Midlothian, Va.) led the Cavs with six kills in the match as sophomore outside hitter
Eustaica Smith (Dugspur, Va.) registered five kills. Freshman setter
Morgan Milligan (Bridgewater, Va.) tallied a team-high 14 assists and 12 digs.
The Golden Eagles were led by Taylor Braunagel, who had seven kills, and Lauryn Driscoll with six kills. Leah Vensel served up five aces for Clarion and made a match-high 16 assists, while Olivia Olson and Julia Holden earned four blocks each and Marissa Robertson got to 12 digs.
The Griffins (8-2) recorded 34 kills and swung .202, including .370 in the opening set, against UVa-Wise in the second match of the day. Contrarily, the Cavs were held to a .052 hitting percentage for the match and 24 kills, not to mention making 19 attack errors. Ten aces and six blocks also aided Seton Hill in the Griffins' win, compared to just two aces and three blocks by UVa-Wise.
A strong first set by the Griffins in which they registered 12 kills en route to a 25-12 set victory, gave Seton Hill a 1-0 lead over the Cavs. In the second set, UVa-Wise held the Griffins to hitting .061 and attacked at a mark of .100, but it wasn't enough as Seton Hill pulled away from the Cavs after an early 7-7 tie to take the set 25-18. After six-straight points won by UVa-Wise in the third set, the Cavs found themselves with an 11-6 lead. However, the advantage would be short lived as Seton Hill claimed 11 of the next 13 points to take back the lead at 17-13. The Cavs would get back to within two at 17-15, but that would be as close as UVa-Wise would get before the Griffins took the set by a score of 25-18 to clinch the match.
Senior middle blocker
Santana Bishop (Gate City, Va.) led the Cavs attack with seven kills as sophomore outside hitter
Ciara Kain (Leesburg, Va.) tallied six of her own. Senior right side hitter
Simona Zduoba (Boyce, Va.) made two blocks, while Milligan assisted on 20 of the Cavs' 24 kills. Senior outside hitter
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) recorded a team-high nine digs and sophomore defensive specialist
Kyra Jessee (Weber City, Va.) added eight more.
The Griffins' Cassie Hausfeld led Seton Hill with 14 kills and three aces, while Maggie Murray made three blocks and dished out a team-high 13 assists. Mary Baich earned a match-high 22 digs for the Griffins as Brynn Fleury assisted on 12 Seton Hill kills.
The Cavs continue play in West Liberty Saturday when they face Slippery Rock University at 11 a.m., followed by Mercyhurst University at 1 p.m.
