Cavs Use Second Half Rally to Top Tornados

WISE - - UVa-Wise outscored Brevard College 6-2 in the second half and finished the game on a 5-0 scoring spurt as the Cavs upended the Tornados 11-9 at the Brevard Lacrosse Field Wednesday. McKayla Grasham scored two of her team-high three goals during the game-ending run to help UVa-Wise overcome a four-goal deficit and improve to 7-2 on the season.

Brevard (7-5) opened the game with a flurry. Shelby Klotz scored four of her game-high five goals in the opening half, including three in the first three minutes as the Tornados took a 4-0 lead with 27:07 to play in the opening period.

Meghan Dennenhy's squad answered with a pair of goals to cut the lead in half. Grasham scored at the 23:38 mark off an Emily Henneberry assist before Hennebery recorded her second point of the game with an unassisted goal at the 18:26 mark. Hannah Marshall got the Cavaliers within one at 4-3 when she found the back of the net on a free position shot at the 17:24 mark.

Brevard would score three of the final five goals of the half as Caitlyn Nemeth scored twice and Klotz added her fourth goal of the 30-minute period.

Marshall and Rachel Cole would post the two goals for UVa-Wise. Cole's goal came with just four seconds to play in the opening half and seemed to provide the team with some momentum going to the second half.

Henneberry's second goal of the game opened the second half scoring and cut the Brevard lead to one at 7-6.

The Tornados would receive goals from Nemeth and Kltoz to run the lead back to three with 22:33 to play before the Cavaliers closed the game on the 5-0 run.

In addition to Grasham's two goals during the run, Sydney Steinberg added a pair of goals while Cole scored her second goal of the contest.

The Cavaliers' Tess Allen and Jessica Apgar picked up four groundballs to tie for the game-high groundball honors. Allen added three caused turnovers while goalie Melanie Reilly posted eight saves and three groundballs.

Livia Harrienger assisted on two of Brevard's nine made goals and Kelly Kearnan and Tempestt Smith led the club with three groundballs.

As a team, the Cavaliers made three of five free position shots compared to the one for four showing from the Tornados.

The win was the third in a row for UVa-Wise and the team has now won seven of its last eight games.

The Cavaliers will return to league play on Friday when Urbana University visits Smith Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
