Cavs Win in Extras in Game One to Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WISE - -  UVa-Wise scored a 7-6 extra-inning win in game one before Glenville State lined 14 hits in an 11-5 game two victory as the two schools split the doubleheader and the four-game series.  The Cavs won the opener on a walk-off error after the Pioneers overcame an early 5-0 deficit to tie it. Game two saw Glenville State score nine unanswered runs en route to the 11-5 triumph.

UVa-Wise (15-17, 5-11 MEC) got off to a good start in game one.  Steve Klaiber lined a three-run homer before a Vinny Kuchenbuch sacrifice fly and a safety squeeze by Brett Yates put the hosts up 5-0.

Glenville State (10-22, 9-7 MEC) began its comeback in the top of the second when Randal Baugher homered to make it a 5-1 game. That's how the score would remain until the sixth inning.

The Pioneers would score three times in the frame to make it a 5-4 game, the last of which came when Zach Sanford doubled in Kenneth Frizzel on an 0-2 pitch. Glenville State was on the cusp of tying the game but Sanford was thrown out at home trying to score on an errant pitch that had reached the backstop.

A Ryan Dickt RBI double would push the UVa-Wise lead to 6-4 in the home half of the frame but the lead would prove to be not big enough.

Kyle Johnston would turn a leadoff single into a run as he moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball before coming home on a wild pitch.  After a walk, Baugher moved the tying run into scoring position with a bunt.

The next play would lead to controversy as Jordan Braniff would hit a ball to UVa-Wise third baseman Matt Wright. Pinch runner Jordan Hunter had ventured too far off second base and Wright went to tag the runner, Hunter avoided the tag and Wright fired to third to attempt to get him out; however, the ball would wind up in the home dugout allowing the tying run to score.

The Cavs would argue that the runner was out of the baseline to no avail leaving the game tied and the tying run on second with no out.

Freshman Alex Dobry would come out of the bullpen and after allowing an infield single would get the next two hitters out to keep the game tied.

The right-hander would also toss a scoreless eighth after his club failed to win in in the home half of the seventh.

Tye Marshall singled to lead off the home eighth before moving to second on a Kuchenbuch sacrifice. The game ended when Glenville State misplayed a hard hit groundball off the bat of Wright.

Marshall led UVa-Wise with two hits while Finzel and Johnston picked up a pair of hits each in the loss.

The win was the first in Dobry's collegiate career as he struck out two against just one walk in two innings of work.

Marcus Elmore led off the home half of the first inning with a hit, it would be his club's final hit until Coffman singled in the sixth.

Jack Misner was effectively wild in earing the mound win. The sophomore walked six, hit two but struck out four and allowed just two hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work.

The Pioneers posted runs in all but one inning in the contest, including three each in the fourth and sixth inning.

Finzel went 4-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Lance Gilbert went 3-4. Johnston and Henderson each went 2-4 in the win.

Coffman picked up two of UVa-Wise's four hits, Klaiber scored a pair of runs.

Next up for the Cavs is a non-conference affair against Winston-Salem State Wednesday at Stallard Field.
