WISE - - Emily Henneberry (4), Catherine Dina (3), Sydney Steinberg (3) and Taylor Lawton (3) combined for 13 of UVa-Wise's 21 goals in a 21-7 victory over the University of Charleston in the Mountain East Conference opener for both schools at Smith Stadium Friday.
Steinberg and Dina added a pair of assists as the duo led all players with five points as the Cavs improved to 6-2 on the season.
UVa-Wise ended the opening half on a five-goal scoring spurt to stretch its lead over Charleston (1-6, 0-1) to 11-3 at intermission.
Henneberry and Marshall scored two goals each in the run, Lawton added the other goal.
Playing a player up for the entirety of the contest, the depth of UVa-Wise proved to be the difference in the second half.
The Cavs outscored the Eagles 10-4 in the second half as the 21 goals for the contest are the most in the two-year history of the program.
Charleston was led by Peyton Harris who netted two goals. Ameilia Ramos, Esther Yi, Nicole Purcell, Aryanna Jones and Gabrielle Messina added a goal each.
Rachel Cole had a solid game for UVa-Wise as well. The sophomore picked up 10 draw controls and six groundballs to lead all players in both categories.
As a team, the Cavs won 20 draw controls compared to nine for the Golden Eagles. Meghan Dennehy's club also won the groundball battle 23-19 while going 12-14 in clear attempts also.
UVa-Wise returns to action on Wednesday when the team visits Brevard for a 4 p.m. first draw.
