Cole Scores Three Second Half Goals in 11-9 Win at Newberry

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - - Rachel Cole scored a trio of second half goals to lead UVa-Wise to an 11-9 come from behind victory over Newberry College Tuesday. Cole's three goals helped offset a 6-3 halftime deficit as UVa-Wise won its second game at Chowan University in the last three days and its fourth consecutive game overall.

Newberry (4-2) Took a 4-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest. The Wolves received a goal from Jessica Baxtrom less than a minute in before Alexis Kahler posted back-to-back unassisted goals to take a 3-0 lead with 23:58 to play in the first half.

Baxtrom picked up her second point of the half with 19:23 showing on the clock when she assisted on Savannah Ohliger's goal, making the score 4-0.

UVa-Wise (4-1) got on the board with 11:27 to play in the half when Cole registered her first point of the day on an assist as Sydney Steinberg's goal cut the deficit to three.

Newberry scored the next two goals of the half to take a 6-1 lead with 7:49 to play in the opening stanza.

Annie Hanson scored for the Cavaliers at the 3:59 mark to begin a stretch of seven straight for Meghan Dennehy's club.

Steinberg scored the final goal of the half to send UVa-Wise to intermission trailing by three at 6-3.

Less than 90 seconds into the final 30 minutes, the Cavs were on the board again. This time Hannah Marshall found Cole who scored what would be the first of her three second half goals to make the score 6-4.

Emily Henneberry and McKayla Grasham would score over the next eight minutes as UVa-Wise tied the contest.

Grasham's goal was the first of three consecutive for the freshman, the Baltimore native's scoring run flipped a 6-5 deficit into an 8-6 advantage with 17:23 to play.

Resilient, the Wolves responded with a pair of goals of their own as Ajahna Grosvenor and Baxtrom combined to score two goals in less than 20 seconds to tie the game at 8-8 with 16:09 showing on the clock.

The remainder of the game belonged to UVa-Wise, back-to-back goals by Coale pushed the lead to 10-8 with just over 14 minutes to play before Henneberry scored off a Catherina Dina assist with 10:10 remaining to take an 11-8 advantage.

Newberry would be unable to muster much offense over the final 10 minutes as their only goal came from Rachel Dillion with 3:23 to play to provide the Cavs with the winning margin of 11-9.

Cole finished with five points while adding three draw controls. Grasham's hat trick was her second of the year while Dina tied for game-high ground ball honors with four.

In goal, Melanie Reilly collected nine saves and two ground balls in the victory.

As a team, UVa-Wise went a perfect 16-16 in clear opportunities while finishing with 21 shots on goal.

Kahler led the Wolves with two goals and Morgan Raffaele led Newberry with four ground balls.

UVa-Wise will be off until March 19 when Young Harris visits Smith Stadium. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
