Cavs Lose Foul Fest to Mountain Lions

WISE - - Saturday's women's lacrosse contest between UVa-Wise and Young Harris College featured 68 fouls and nine cards. The visiting Mountain Lions eventually won the more than two-hour game by the score of 14-6 behind Erika Cross' four-goal performance. The loss snapped what was a four-game winning streak for the Cavaliers.

Young Harris (6-4) led wire-to-wire as goals by Cross, Taylor Lincoln and Rachel Lepine in the opening 10 minutes staked the guests to a 3-0 lead.

UVa-Wise (4-2) would score three of the next four goals to cut the lead to one at 4-3 with 6:35 to play in the opening half.

Cross' second goal of the first half came with 4:21 showing on the clock to send her team to intermission leading 5-3

The goal was the first of five consecutive for the Mountain Lions who took a 9-3 lead when Cross found the back of the net for the fourth time with 20:39 to play in the contest.

UVa-Wise would get to as close as 10-5 thanks to a pair of goals by Emily Henneberry but would be unable to get closer.

Rachel Cole and Henneberry led the Cavs with two goals each while goalie Melanie Reilly collected 13 saves and five ground balls.

Lepine netted three goals and Lincoln, Kendra Parenteau and Nicole Kernohan posted two goals each for Young Harris.

The Mountain Lions' Hannah Sacristan joined the Cavs' Lauren Donahue and Hannah Marshall as players who picked up two yellow cards in the game.

Next up for UVa-Wise is a home contest against the University of Pikeville on March 30. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Smith Stadium.
