MURFREESBORO, N.C. - - UVa-Wise won its third consecutive game Sunday as freshman Sydney Steinberg registered the first hat trick of her collegiate career with a four-goal effort as her club claimed a 14-1 win over Chowan at Hawks Field.
UVa-Wise (3-1) wasted little time getting an early lead as Meghan Dennehy's team took a 3-1 lead less than 17 minutes into the contest. Rachel Cole, Emily Henneberry and Steinberg scored for the Cavaliers while Cole and Steinberg also added an assist in the opening minutes.
Chowan (0-5) scored its only goal of the game at the 23:54 mark of the opening half when Mackenzie Reid scored a short-handed goal making the score 2-1.
The Hawks played at least one player down for the entirety of the contest and the effects began to show in the second half.
After leading 6-1 at intermission, UVa-Wise blitzed Chowan 8-0 in the final 30 minutes to cruise to the 14-1 victory.
Steinberg scored three goals in the second half while Catherina Dina collected a pair of goals as well.
Overall, seven different Cavs scored as UVa-Wise won its program-best third consecutive game.
Dennehy's squad dominated every facet of the game, the Hawks managed just two shots on goal in the second half while the Cavs went a perfect 14-14 in clear opportunities.
Kristin Gobbi added a team-high three ground balls while Taylor Lawton, Hannah Marshall and Kerani Davidson caused two turnovers each.
UVa-Wise's Rachel Cole and Chowan's Haley Haggard tied for game-high draw controls with five each.
The Cavs continued to receive strong play in net as goalie Melanie Reilly collected nine saves; in the last three games opponents have scored just three goals against the sophomore.
UVa-Wise will try to push its winning streak to four Tuesday when the team faces Newberry College.
