Cavs Lock Down Bobcats in 10-5 Win

WISE - - UVa-Wise has now won five of its last six games after defeating visiting Lees-McRae College 10-5 at Carl Smith Stadium Tuesday.  The contest marked the fourth time this season that coach Meghan Dennehy's club has limited an opponent to five or fewer goals as the Cavaliers limited the Bobcats to just 10 shots on goal in the victory.

UVa-Wise (5-2) scored the first three goals of the day. Hannah Marshall scored off a Catherina Dina assist to get the scoring going at the 28:03 mark of the first half before Kristin Gobbi scored unassisted at the 20:14 mark. Less than 30 seconds later, Dina's second assist of the game led to McKayla Grasham's 14th goal of the season.

Lees-McRae (3-6) would get on the board with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening half on Tiffany Laster's unassisted goal.

The momentum was quickly squashed as Dina handed out two more assists as Annie Hanson and Hannah Marshall would score to give the Cavs their biggest lead of the period at 5-1 with 6:28 to play in the opening half.

Peyton LeCompte's 27th goal of the season got the Bobcats within three at 5-2 heading to intermission.

Lees-McRae would get to within two on Laster's second goal of the day earlier in the second half but it would be as close as the visitors would get.

UVa-Wise would score three goals in less than two minutes to stretch the lead to 8-3 with 23:29 to play. Rachel Cole scored her 15th goal of the year to start the run before Gobbi's second goal of the day precluded Dina's fifth point of the day when she scored unassisted.

LeCompte would score a pair of goals over the final 18:36 of the game but was matched by two goals from the Cavs' Sydney Steinberg.

Dina finished the game with a season-high six points (five assists) while Marshall, Gobbi and Steinberg each netted two goals in the win. Jessica Apgar (6), Gobbi (4) and Lauren Donahue (4) combined for 14 groundballs to aid UVa-Wise to a 27-25 advantage in the category.

Rachel Cole matched Lees-McRae in draw controls as the sophomore's five led to a 12-5 advantage for UVa-Wise. As a team, the Cavs have now won or played even in the draw control battle in all but two games in 2016.

The University of Charleston will visit Smith Stadium Friday as the two schools begin Mountain East Conference play. First draw is set for 6 p.m. in what will be the Golden Eagles first MEC contest.
