Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio - - Host Urbana University used a four-run seventh inning to claim a 6-5 extra inning win in the opener before a seven-run second allowed the Blue Knights to cruise to a 12-3 win over UVa-Wise in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
UVa-Wise (10-11, 0-6 MEC) struck first when Ben Coffman's two-out RBI double scored Ty Lighton in the top of the first inning of the day's opener.
The score would remain 1-0 until the home fifth inning as Urbana (7-13, 3-3 MEC) starter Austin Mace matched Steven Klaiber zero-for-zero.
The Blue Knights tied the game when Damario Brown's single scored Bradley Burkholder. Urbana had an opportunity to take its first lead of the day but Klaiber was able to get out of trouble by inducing a routine fly ball off the bat of Brent West to leave the bases loaded.
The Cavaliers regained the lead in the top of the sixth as Marcus Elmore singled, stole second and scored on Klaiber's base hit through the left side of the infield.
UVa-Wise seemingly put the game away in the top of the seventh when Elmore lined a two-RBI single before scoring the third run of the frame on a Lighton single.
Trailing 5-1, the Blue Knights' offense came to life as the first six hitters that stepped to the plate reached base off a trio of pitchers.
The strong start to the inning tied the game and had runners on second and third with nobody out. After moving to the mound from second base, Lighton retired the next three hitters to force extra innings.
UVa-Wise failed to score in its half of the eighth and Lighton appeared to be on the cusp of a forcing a ninth frame after retiring the first two batters.
Aaron Finlay would extend the inning with a walk before stealing second and third to put the winning run 90 feet away. Finlay scored on Connor Coy's RBI single to complete the come from behind victory.
Adam Ramirez (1-1) picked up the win on the mound as he tossed a scoreless inning of relief while Lighton (0-1) was the losing pitching.
Elmore and Coffman each had two hits for UVa-Wise while Brown and Lopez had two hits each for Urbana in the opener.
Game two saw the Blue Knights jump out to an early 7-0 lead as the hosts collected four hits and took advantage of three walks a hit batter and an error by the Cavs in a seven-run second inning.
Coffman picked up a pair of RBIs in the loss while Cal Bailey scored the Cavs' third run on a wild pitch.
Brown went 3-4 with two RBIs as did D.J. Collins for Urbana. Finlay knocked in three in the victory.
UVa-Wise will travel to Notre Dame College tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
