WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise softball earned a 2-1 win over Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon in West Virginia Wesleyan's tournament in Salem, Virginia, after dropping a 4-3 game to Indiana University of Pennsylvania this morning.
The Cavaliers (10-9) saw two games ending in walk-off runs Saturday as UVa-Wise defeated the Griffins (4-8) on a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Earlier in the day, the Cavs were topped by the Crimson Hawks (8-5) when IUP scored the game-winning run after an error on a fly ball to center field.
UVa-Wise collected seven hits against Seton Hill University and redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Taylor Brandts (King George, Va.) struck out eight batters in the Cavs win.
Both teams went scoreless for three and a half innings of play before sophomore catcher
Bridget Henzel (Toano, Va.) doubled to center field in the bottom of the fourth for a RBI, scoring junior third baseman
Olivia Cleary (Riner, Va.).
The Griffins tied up the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when Abbey Suhoski singled to center field, allowing Carlee Wickstrom to reach home from second base.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, freshman left fielder
Shannon Bennett (Covington, Va.) singled to center field for the walk-off RBI. Freshman center fielder
Ava Hockey (Virginia Beach, Va.), who was pinch running for senior designated player
Mindy Combs (Lebanon, Va.), scored on the play.
Sophomore shortstop
Samantha Ely (Jonesville, Va.) led the Cavs with two hits in the contest, while
Taylor Brandts pitched all seven innings to claim the win and improve her record to 4-2 on the season.
Tiffany Edwards (0-2) took the loss for Seton Hill University in six and two thirds innings of work.
Game one of the day saw only four hits by UVa-Wise as the Cavs were unable to maintain a 3-2 lead after a three-run third inning.
The Crimson Hawks took a 2-0 lead on the Cavs in the first when Allison Viguers hit a two-run homer over the center field wall.
UVa-Wise responded in the third with an Ely two RBI double down the left field line that brought sophomore right fielder
Zoe Millard (Glen Allen, Va.) and Cleary across home plate. The Cavs took a 3-2 in the inning when freshman right-handed pitcher
Delany Turner (Leesburg, Va.) grounded out to the shortstop for a RBI as Combs scored on the play.
IUP tied things up in the bottom of the fourth after Taylor Mercurio scored on a Rachel Francis single through the left side. With Hannah Mercer on third base and no outs in the bottom of the seventh, Alaina Montgomery reached on an error that allowed Mercer to score the walk-off run to give the Crimson Hawks the victory.
Mercer made three of the Crimson Hawks' eight hits in the game, while IUP's Brooke Darling struck out five batters in seven innings to claim the win.
Turner went the distance for the Cavs and took the loss, dropping her record to 3-2 on the year.
The Cavs continue play in West Virginia Wesleyan's tournament in Salem, Virginia, Sunday when they face Lake Erie College at 9 a.m. and Shippensburg University at 11 a.m.
