WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise softball came out on the losing end of a 4-3 decision against Lake Erie College Sunday morning at West Virginia Wesleyan's tournament in Salem, Virginia, before falling 11-7 to Shippensburg University later in the day.
The Cavaliers (10-11) recorded 10 hits in the loss to Lake Erie College but could not get runs late despite tying up the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
The Storm (8-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Allyson Hajnosz hit a solo home run over the center field wall, followed by Elizabeth Karako scoring on an Arial Birtley ground out to second base later in the inning.
UVa-Wise got on the board in the top of the third after sophomore shortstop
Samantha Ely (Jonesville, Va.) singled to right field, bringing home sophomore right fielder
Zoe Millard (Glen Allen, Va.). The Cavs would then tie the game up in the top of the fourth as freshman second baseman
Jackie Yahner (Vienna, Va.) got her first home run of the season, a shot over the left field wall.
Lake Erie College scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth as Savannah Karako doubled to left field, allowing Birtley to score. The Storm extended their lead to 4-2 later in the inning when Hajnosz reached on an error and Savannah Karako reached home.
The Cavs were only able to get one run in the final three innings with Ely homering over the left field wall in the fifth for UVa-Wise's final score of the game.
Recording two RBI, Ely led the Cavs in the contest with three hits in four at bats. Freshman right-handed pitcher
Delany Turner (Leesburg, Va.) took the loss for the Cavs in three and one third innings of work, dropping her record to 3-3 on the season.
Lake Erie College's Allyson Deemer (5-5) got the win for the Storm, striking out five batters in the complete game.
Shippensburg (9-12) collected 17 hits and scored 11 times on UVa-Wise in the second game of the day as the two teams combined for nine home runs.
The Cavs got the first two runs of the game when Ely hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot over the left field wall. Both teams would go scoreless in the second inning before the Raiders tied things up in the top of the third.
Shippensburg's Macy Luck doubled to center field in order for Tara Bicko to score, before Luck scored on a Taylor Pattillo fly out to center field. The Raiders scored a go-ahead run in the top of the fourth after Anna Warfield homered over the right field wall.
Yahner hit her second home run of the day for the Cavs on a dinger over the center field wall in the bottom of the fourth to tie up the score once again, this time at 3-3.
A three-run sixth for Shippensburg gave the Raiders a 6-3 advantage as Warfield got her second home run of the game on a two-run homer over left field. Eryn Caragein made the third score of the inning for the Raiders when she hit a solo home run over the center field wall.
Pattillo homered over the right field wall for two runs in the top of the seventh before Caragein smacked her second home run of the day, a three-run shot over center field to extend the Shippensburg lead to eight at 11-3.
With the Cavs having one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, UVa-Wise made the best of it but was only able to score four times. Senior designated player
Mindy Combs (Lebanon, Va.) homered over the center field wall for two runs after sophomore catcher
Bridget Henzel (Toano, Va.) reached on a hit by pitch. Following an Ely double, freshman left fielder
Shannon Bennett (Covington, Va.) hit a home run over center field for two more scores. However, that would be all as three consecutive batters were retired by the Raiders' Taryn Wilson.
Once again, Ely led the Cavs in the game with a 4-for-4 performance that included a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Taylor Brandts (King George, Va.) took the loss for UVa-Wise in six innings of work, dropping her season mark to 4-3.
Shippensburg's Chloe Collins struck out six batters and pitched six innings to pick up the win for the Raiders, improving her season record to 3-5.
The Cavs now turn to conference play, which will begin with a six-game road trip over the next week and start Wednesday at West Virginia State. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
