Cavs Sweep Trojans on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ETTRICK, Va. - - UVa-Wise used a four-run sixth inning to claim a 9-6 win in the opener before overcoming a three-run deficit to claim a 5-3 extra inning win in game two to post a road doubleheader sweep of Virginia State University in the season opener for both teams Sunday.

UVa-Wise (2-0) struck first in game one when sophomore third baseman Matt Wright lined a two-out RBI double in the top of the second inning. Wright's run-scoring hit plated Steven Klaiber who had walked earlier in the frame.

A half inning later, Virginia State (0-2) tied it up by using some timely two out hitting as well. Julian White led off the frame with a base hit before coming around to score on a two-out double by Aaron Harris.

Ty Lighton's second hit of the day got the Cavaliers going in the third inning. Fellow senior Tye Marshall knocked the Ashburn native in with a run-scoring single to put the visitors back in front 2-1.

The Trojans would take their first lead of the day in the home half of the inning. After Klaiber fanned the first two hitters of the frame, Rodney Shell worked a walk. The outfielder would score one batter later when David Markins doubled down the right field line, tying the game.  Virginia State would post a second run in the inning on an error to take a 3-2 advantage to the fourth inning.

The first five Cavs that stepped to the plate in the fourth inning would reach base.  Ryan Dickt would tie the game when his run-scoring single scored Wright. UVa-Wise regained the lead when Marcus Elmore scampered home on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Yates.

Ben Coffman gave his club a two-run lead when he lined a two-out RBI single plating Lighton.

Trailing 5-3, the Trojans once again answered.  Lamar Jones got his club within a run when his base hit scored Harris. Virginia State tied the game later in the frame on Tashaun Taylor's RBI double.

A scoreless fifth inning would preclude the four-run UVa-Wise rally.  Coffman would deliver the big blow in the frame with a two-RBI triple, Marshall and Klaiber also picked up an RBI each in the big inning.

Virginia State would score an unearned run in the seventh inning but would be unable to get closer than three runs as UVa-Wise won its season opener for the first time since 2013.

Lighton finished the opener 4-5 with three runs scored, Coffman collected three RBIs and Marshall added two RBIs.

Jared Finch picked up the win out of the bullpen. The senior tossed three innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out four.

No Trojan picked up more than one hit and Jordan Claytor was saddled with the loss as he surrendered four runs in three innings of relief.

Virginia State's Jacob Wells held the UVa-Wise bats silent for most of game two. The freshman left-hander allowed just one run over the first five innings as Vinny Kuchenbuch's solo homer to lead off the third inning was the only blemish for Wells.

Wells' strong performance allowed his team to build a 3-1 lead. Johnny Rowe had a RBI groundout in the second inning before Markins answered Kuchenbuch's home run with one of his own in the third inning.

Virginia State's third run of the game came when Rowe singled in Griffin making the score 3-1 after four innings.

The score would remain unchanged until the UVa-Wise half of the sixth inning.  Kuchenbuch's big day continued when his two-out two-RBI single scored Coffman and Yates to tie the contest at 3-3.

Senior right-hander Cody Jewell would keep the game tied as he pitched out of trouble in both the sixth and seventh frames to force extra innings. Virginia State had the winning run at second base in each of the frames but the Trojans went 0-3 with men in scoring position against Jewell.

After stranding the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, the Cavs took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth when Jones came in to relief Wells.

Klaiber picked up a one-out single and scored on a run-scoring double by Marshall. Wright gave Jewell some insurance when his second RBI of the day brought Marshall home.

Jewell returned to the mound in the bottom portion of the frame and retired the Trojans in order to pick up the victory. Jewell fanned four and walked just one while allowing just two hits in his four innings of relief.

Kuchenbuch finished 2-3 with three RBIs in game two while Lighton finished the doubleheader 5-10. UVa-Wise pitchers struck out 12 against four walks in the two contests.

The Cavs' season-opening nine-game road trip continues Friday when Hank Banner's club visits Carson-Newman College to begin a three-game series.
