Cavs Lose Two One-Run Games at Southern Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CENTRAL, S.C. - - UVa-Wise dropped a pair of one-run decisions at Southern Wesleyan Saturday. The Warriors scored a run in the home half of the ninth to win 10-9 in the opener before a five-run seventh inning led to back-to-back walk off victories for the hosts.

UVa-Wise (3-3) fell behind 8-2 in the opener before scoring five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to cut the deficit to 8-7.

Southern Wesleyan (7-5) took a 9-7 lead to the top of the ninth after a DiMarkus Sanders RBI single plated Brad Brisko in the home eighth.

As they have done all season, UVa-Wise battled back. Steven Klaiber doubled to lead off the inning and scored a hitter later on a Ben Coffman run-scoring hit. The Cavaliers tied the game on a RBI single by Brett Yates.

While the two-run frame tied the game at 9-9, UVa-Wise would strand a pair of runners that would prove costly.

The Warriors picked up the walk off victory thanks to a game-winning RBI by Sanders that once again scored Brisko.

Ty Lighton picked up a pair of hits and scored three runs while knocking in one for UVa-Wise. Klaiber finished 3-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, Matt Wright also added three hits while Yates, Coffman and Ryan Dickt had two hits each as part of a 17-hit effort.

Bisko led all players with four hits in the contest while Trevor Walker and Connor Ewing had three hits for the Warriors.

Jordan Finster picked up the victory on the mound as he allowed two runs in two innings of work. Tyler Rio started the game for Southern Wesleyan and allowed seven runs while striking out four in 5.1 innings of action.

Jared Finch took the loss after surrendering two runs in 3.2 innings, the right-hander allowed six hits while walking two.

The Warriors' game one victory tied the series at 1-1 making the final game of the day a rubber match.

Game two saw Klaiber and Southern Wesleyan starter Josh Core match zero-for-zero until the top of the fourth inning.

In the frame, the Cavs struck for a two-out run as Coffman singled with nobody on.  Tye Marshal brought Coffman home when he tripled to right field.

UVa-Wise would run its lead to 4-0 in the visiting half of the fifth inning. Wright doubled with one away before Lighton lined a run-scoring hit. An RBI ground out by Dickt plated the second run of the frame before Klaiber singled up the middle to score Lighton for the inning's third run.

The Warriors offense heated up in the latter innings. Southern Wesleyan tied the game in the home fifth on five hits.

Sanders and John Garrett had an RBI each while Connor Ewing delivered a two-RBI double to tie the contest.

UVa-Wise seemingly put the game away in the top of the sixth when Wright doubled in Bryan Andrews before Marcus Elmore's first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, put his club up 7-4. The Cavs added a fourth run in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Klaiber to go to the home sixth just six outs from a series win.

Chase Patrylak would enter the game for the Cavs in the sixth looking to hold a four-run advantage. Patrylak would allow a hit and a walk but would keep the Warriors off the board, sending the game to the seventh.

After a scoreless top half of the frame, Southern Wesleyan would score five runs on just two hits for its second walk off victory of the day.

The winning run would score on an infield single by Brisko that scored Devin Patrick who reached base earlier in the inning via bases loaded walk.

Hamilton Hartsell took home the mound victory after retiring UVa-Wise in order in the top of the seventh.

Elmore, Coffman and Wright were the top offensive performers for UVa-Wise. The trio combined for six hits, three RBIs and five runs scored.

UVa-Wise was slated to begin the home portion of its schedule Wednesday against Tusculum College but, the game has been moved to March 15. The Cavs will venture to St. Augustine's University next weekend for a four-game series. The action gets started with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
