Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. - - UVa-Wise scored six runs with two outs in the seventh inning Friday to erase a three-run deficit as the Cavaliers posted a 9-7 road win over Southern Wesleyan at Dr. Connor Field. Tye Marshall and Ty Lighton had two RBIs each in the big frame as the offensive outburst made a winner out of freshman left-hander Noah Collins who claimed his first collegiate mound victory.
UVa-Wise (3-1) had the first scoring opportunity of the day in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Ben Coffman doubled to lead off the frame and tried to score two batters later when Brett Yates singled to left field. Coffman rounded third but was thrown out at home as left fielder Jason Moldenhauer and shortstop John Garrett completed a perfect relay to catcher Trey Mathews keeping the game scoreless.
Southern Wesleyan (5-5) would score in the home half of the inning. Luke Hostetler led off the frame with a base hit before moving up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Matthews produced the first run of the game with a run-scoring hit up the middle.
Trailing 1-0, the Cavaliers quickly answered in the top of the fifth. Marcus Elmore walked and stole second base to lead off the frame. The Blacksburg, S.C. native tied the game when Coffman reached on a fielder's choice. A batter later, Hank Banner's club took its first lead of the day when Marshall worked a bases loaded walk as part of his three RBI performance.
The score would remain unchanged until the Warriors put their first three hitters on to begin the sixth. Southern Wesleyan would capitalize on the opportunity by plating four runs on just two hits as UVa-Wise issued a season-worst nine walks in the contest, including three in the frame.
As was the case earlier in the contest, UVa-Wise responded. The six-run seventh inning featured five hits, including a two-run triple by Marshall.
Coffman left his outfield position and ventured to the mound for the game's final three innings. The senior turned in a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the seventh to keep momentum in favor of the visitors, setting the stage for UVa-Wise to play add-on in the eighth.
Coffman lined his second double of the game to lead off the frame and came around to score on a Yates' sacrifice fly.
Coffman's strong day continued in the eighth when he retired the side in order for the second consecutive inning.
Southern Wesleyan mounted a comeback bid in the ninth as a walk and a pair of hits cut the deficit to 9-7. The Warriors got the tying run to the plate in form of Matthews with two outs. Coffman would get the catcher to groundout ending the game and notching the save for the Fort Hood, Texas product.
Three Cavs recorded two hits as part of a nine-hit effort. Coffman picked up a RBI and a run scored with his two-hit showing while Marshall scored a run in addition to his three RBIs, Yates picked up two RBIs and a run scored.
Junior left-hander Nathan Hatmaker started the game on the mound for UVa-Wise. The Cumberland, Tenn. native pitched four innings of one-run ball before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Collins, a former Wilson Memorial High School standout, allowed a run on two hits to garner the win in his collegiate debut.
Hostetler and Connor Ewing picked up two hits each for the Warriors while Roth Matthews allowed three runs in a third of an inning to become the losing pitcher.
The same two teams will be back at it tomorrow when the series wraps up with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
