Carson-Newman Slides by UVa-Wise in Extra Innings

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - An unearned run in extra innings of game one will stand as the only run of the day as Carson-Newman claimed a 1-0 victory over UVa-Wise in eight innings in the first game of what was a scheduled doubleheader Sunday.

While game one was played in sub-freezing temperatures, game two never neared completion due to accumulating snow at the Diamond Sports Complex.

Carson-Newman (2-4) starter Vince Apicella was as advertised in the opener. The Coastal Carolina transfer retired seven consecutive hitters at one point as he went all eight innings to claim his first win of the season. Apicella struck out 10 against three walks while scattering three hits.

UVa-Wise (2-1) failed to put a runner in scoring position until the sixth inning when Ryan Dickt reached on an error before moving up 90 feet on a passed ball.

Brett Yates just missed giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead on a line drive down the right field line that just hooked foul. The shortstop would not see another pitch with Dickt in scoring position as Apicella picked off Dickt for the inning's second out.

Yates would eventually walk but would be caught stealing to end the threat.

While Apicella was pitching a gem for the Eagles, the senior duo of Steven Klaiber and Jared Finch matched the left-hander zero-for-zero throughout the contest.

Klaiber tossed the first four frames allowing just one base runner. The Roanoke product struck out six without allowing a walk before turning the game over to Finch.

Finch immediately found himself in trouble after Eric Lynch reached base via an error to lead off the fifth inning.  After a sacrifice bunt and a hit batsman, the Nickelsville native settled down and retired the next two hitters to keep the game scoreless.

The next scoring chance for either school came in the top of the eighth when senior Marcus Elmore lined a one-out double for UVa-Wise. The Blacksburg, S.C. product moved to third on a Ty Lighton groundout but would be stranded 90 feet from home to end the inning.

Finch appeared to be on the cusp of forcing a ninth inning after retiring the first two men of the frame before Brandon Roberts doubled. The senior would score the game-winning run moments later when Ryan Addington's grounder was misplayed.

Roberts finished as the only player on either team with more than one hit as the two schools combined for just six hits in Carson-Newman's home opener.

Finch was the hard-luck loser as he allowed an unearned run in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander allowed two hits out of the bullpen while striking out one without allowing a walk.

Carson-Newman had an early 4-0 lead in game two but the game failed to reach enough innings to count as a regulation contest due to snow accumulating on the field. The cancelation wipes away all stats from players on both teams.

Cavalier pitching is off to a good start in 2016. Through three games, UVa-Wise pitchers have posted a 2.38 ERA and are holding the opposition to a .165 batting average.

Hank Banner's squad is slated to play at Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday.  Please visit www.uvawisecavs.com and follow @UVaWiseCavs on Twitter for the latest on weather related schedule changes on the baseball program.
