Cavalier Women Tripped up in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - - Anelisse Vargas scored a game-high 19 points and the University of Puerto Rico – Bayamon forced 22 UVa-Wise turnovers en route to a 51-48 win at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum Sunday.

Sunday's contest featured three ties and five lead changes but ultimately it was the turnovers that did the Cavaliers in. UPR – Bayamon turned the miscues into 23 points to help offset its poor field goal shooting. The Cowboys made just 31.4 percent of their field goal attempts while also struggling at the free throw line (59.1 percent).

Senior Kayla Carey led UVa-Wise with 15 points and nine rebounds but was limited to 22 minutes of action due to foul trouble. No other Cavalier finished in double figure scoring.

Jamillette Quinoes chipped in 13 points for the Cowboys while adding a pair of steals. As a team, UPR – Bayamon registered 10 steals, including a game-high four by Vargas.

The game wraps up a two-game trip to Puerto Rico for UVa-Wise, Kristin Kunzman's team went 1-1 on the trip.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Dec. 31 at 12 p.m. against Lees-McRae in the Prior Center.
