Box Score WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise volleyball team won its third-consecutive Mountain East Conference match Saturday evening inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center by taking down West Virginia State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-17). The Cavaliers (9-22, 7-7 MEC) earned the home sweep in dominant fashion, not allowing the visiting Yellow Jackets (6-20, 3-11 MEC) to win more than 18 points in any set and recording 38 kills off an attack percentage of .273.
Senior outside hitter
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) became UVa-Wise's all-time leader in kills with her first kill of the match in the opening set. Allen's kill was the 1,575th of her career, which broke Natasha Viers' previous program record of 1,574 career kills set back in 2007. After finishing with a match-high nine kills, Allen has now amassed 1,583 kills in her career with two more regular season match yet to be played.
The Cavs outplayed the Yellow Jackets in every faucet of the game, making seven service aces in the match and totaling five blocks as a team. Defensively, UVa-Wise got to 36 digs and held West Virginia State to 26 kills in the three sets with a hitting mark of .056.
UVa-Wise came out swinging in the first set and hit a blistering .500 with 17 kills and only two attack errors. The Cavs cooled off in the second and third sets but the Yellow Jackets saw their errors increase as UVa-Wise's defense began to settle in. A string of six consecutive points late in the opening by the Cavs gave the home team a 22-15 advantage that it would not relinquish. UVa-Wise went on to win the set 25-18 after the two teams split the last six points of the set.
Jumping out to an eight-point 13-5 lead in the second set, the Cavs never trailed again for the rest of the match. UVa-Wise claimed four of the last five points of the set to win it 25-15 and take a commanding 2-0 set lead. West Virginia State stayed within striking distance in the third before five-consecutive points gave the Cavs a 15-7 advantage. The Yellow Jackets made a slight comeback and got within five at 20-15 and 21-16, but that would be it as UVa-Wise once again took four of the last five points to clinch the match with a 25-17 third-set win.
Senior outside hitter
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) filled up the scoresheet for the Cavs with eight kills, two service aces, seven digs and three assists. Sophomore right side hitter
Amanda Auxier (Midlothian, Va.) swung at a mark of .500 as she recorded seven kills and made four blocks, while senior middle blockers
Santana Bishop (Weber City, Va.) and
Lindsey Tucker (Midlothian, Va.) each hit .417 and tallied six kills. Bishop also earned four blocks as Allen added two aces to her nine kills and six digs. Freshman setter
Morgan Milligan (Bridgewater, Va.) assisted on 27 of the Cavs' 38 kills and got to seven digs, while senior libero
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) contributed seven digs from the back line.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Karee Vaughn and Taylor Allbritten, each of whom had seven kills. Makala Cook added four more kills for West Virginia State as Rebekah Baldwin provided two blocks and Brooke Cieslewski dished out an ace. Mallory Rennard assisted on 12 of the Yellow Jackets' 26 kills and got to five digs, while Allison Tumey collected seven assists and four digs.
The Cavs wrap up the regular season next weekend and finish off their five-match homestand by welcoming Fairmont State University to Wise Friday for a 7 p.m. match, before hosting Shepherd University Saturday at 1 p.m.
