WISE - - Seniors Kayla Carey and Makenzie Cluesman each recorded a double-double as UVa-Wise overcame a 16-point second half deficit to claim its fourth consecutive victory, 94-91 over West Virginia State at the Prior Center Monday.
West Virginia State (2-3, 1-1 MEC) took its biggest lead of the day at the 8:52 mark of the third quarter when Rachel Ward made a 3-pointer, was fouled and completed a four point play to make it 62-46. Ward's 3-pointer was one of 18 made by the Yellow Jackets in the contest.
Following Ward's play, UVa-Wise (4-1, 2-0 MEC) would go on an 11-0 run. Sophomore Alle Moore got the run started when she scored inside off a Cluesman pass. A possession later, Cluesman sank a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 62-50. The Jonesville, Va. native got the lead to 10 when the Cavaliers scored on a fast break.
Fellow senior Taylor Sandidge would get the hosts within single digits for the first time since late in the second quarter when she canned a 3-pointer with 7:14 to play in the third period. Cluesman finished the run with her sixth point of the stretch to make it 62-57 with 6:42 showing on the third quarter clock.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a run of their own as senior Aurreshae Hines would score five points as part of a 9-2 scoring spurt to make the score 71-60.
The game of runs continued as Cluesman would score five of her team's seven points on a 7-0 run to get it down to 71-67.
Charles Marshall's West Virginia State squad would hold the lead until 3:53 remaining in the game when freshman Kayla Mullins connected on a 3-pointer from the left corner. The Clintwood, Va. native's shot made it 85-83.
The freshman connection would continue as Virginia Beach, Va.'s Cynita Webb scored inside off a Mullins pass before former Floyd County High School star Natalie Boothe swished a 3-pointer. Moore finished what proved to be the decisive scoring run of the game with a layup to make the score 92-83 with 1:49 to play.
West Virginia State made one final push as a Tatyana Reynolds' 3-pointer and a Hines bucket inside made it 92-88 with 61 seconds to play. After a missed 3-pointer by Cluesman, the Yellow Jackets got within one as Reynolds connected on a 3-pointer with 23 ticks to play.
UVa-Wise called timeout after the Reynolds 3-pointer and advanced the ball to mid-court. The Cavs inbounded the basketball and worked it to Sandidge who calmly drained both free throws to make it 94-91.
Reynolds would get one final shot off but it came up no good, giving UVa-Wise its first four game winning streak since December of 2012.
The Yellow Jackets appeared to be on the cusp of putting the game out of reach in the second quarter as they finished the half on a 31-17 run. Overall, West Virginia State made 12 first half 3-pointers, Reynolds led the group with three long range makes in the opening 20 minutes.
With its beyond the arc shooting prowess, Marshall's club built a 56-43 advantage. UVa-Wise was able to say in the game thanks to 18 points from Carey who added six rebounds and two assists in the half.
Cluesman scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half to propel the comeback. The guard added 12 boards and four assists while committing just one turnover against a Yellow Jackets team that employed a full court press for all 40 minutes.
Despite turning the ball over 25 times, Kristin Kunzman's Cavs finished with more assists, 30, than turnovers, 25.
Carey added 11 boards and four assists to her game-high 23 points, Sandidge chipped in 12 to round a trio of double figure scorers in the win.
UVa-Wise freshmen played a big role in the victory, Boothe (9), Webb (8) and Mullins (3) combined for 20 points in their first Mountain East Conference home game.
Reynolds and Hines each finished with 20 points while Sydney Bates added 16 in the loss. West Virginia State became the fifth consecutive team to lose the battle of the boards to UVa-Wise as the Yellow Jackets lost the rebounding battle 56-46.
Kunzman's team is 2-0 in MEC play for the first time since joining the conference. The Cavs will look for the fifth consecutive victory Saturday when the team visits Tusculum College. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Greeneville, Tenn.
