GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise outscored host Tusculum College 19-9 in the third quarter to overcome a 32-27 halftime deficit en route to a 63-58 women's basketball win Saturday. With the win, the Cavaliers have now won five consecutive games for the first time since the 2006 season when the program made its only appearance in the national tournament.
UVa-Wise (5-1) fell behind by seven points in the opening moments of the second half but responded with a 10-2 run to take a 37-36 lead with 4:05 to play in the third quarter. During the scoring spurt, Makenzie Cluesman scored four of her game-high 20 points while Kayla Carey added three points and Ashley Cullen connected on an inside jumper.
Tusculum (1-4) responded with a layup from Tara Shields to take a one point lead at 38-37. It would be the Pioneers final lead of the game as Taylor Sandidge responded with a pair of foul shots for UVa-Wise to begin a 9-2 scoring run to close the quarter.
Kayla Mullins and Cluesman would each make a 3-pointer in what proved to be the decisive scoring run.
Tusculum would get no closer than five points at any point in the fourth quarter as coach Kristin Kunzman's team limited the Pioneers to 26 percent shooting in the second half.
Tusculum built its halftime lead behind solid field goal shooting. The Pioneers made 14 of 29 field goal attempts and played nearly even on the boards, collecting 16 rebounds compared to 17 for UVa-Wise.
Carey (12) and Allison Ball (10) joined Cluesman in double figure scoring in the win. As a team, the Cavs made 21 of 28 free throw attempts while winning the battle of the boards 41-33.
Tusculum received a team-high 12 points from Benedicta Shields. Regan Croff (11) and Jasmine Queen (10) also scored in double figure scoring for the Pioneers.
Next up for UVa-Wise is West Virginia Wesleyan. Like the Cavs, the Bobcats will enter the contest undefeated in the Mountain East Conference at 2-0. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Prior Center.
