Kayla Carey's Big Night Helps Give UVa-Wise Second Consecutive Win

WISE - - Kayla Carey scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as UVa-Wise claimed its second consecutive victory with a 66-50 win over Winston-Salem State at the Prior Center Wednesday. Kristin Kunzman's team outscored the Rams 28-14 in the fourth quarter to break open what was a two point game. It was the 50th win at UVa-Wise for Kunzman.

UVa-Wise (2-1) used an 18-0 run mid-way through the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The streak began when junior Allison Ball was fouled on a 3-point attempt. The Newport, Tenn. native went to the charity stripe and sank all three foul shots to give the Cavaliers a 48-41 lead with 5:54 to play.

Ball would come up with a steal on Winston-Salem State's (0-3) next possession and after a Carey offensive rebound, Makenzie Cluesman drained one of her game-high three 3-pointers to run the lead to 51-41.

The Rams would commit a pair of turnovers during the stretch and go 0-7 from the field as the game slipped away.

For the game, Winston-Salem State shot just 32.8 percent from the field. It marked the third consecutive game UVa-Wise held its opponent below 38 percent field goal shooting.

The Cavs built an 18-15 lead after the opening quarter thanks to a fast start by Cluesman. The redshirt senior from Joneville, Va. scored eight of her 14 points in the period, including two 3-pointers.

After neither side could generate much offense in the second period, UVa-Wise went to the locker room leading 25-21.

Winston-Salem State would finish the third quarter on a flurry as a Taelor Mandeville jumper precluded a 3-point play by Kandace Tate at the buzzer. Tate's 3-point play cut the lead to two at 38-36 with 10 minutes to play.

The fourth quarter rally was nothing new for UVa-Wise. In its most recent win against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Kunzman's crew scored 29 points to overcome a 12-point deficit.

In its last two games, UVa-Wise is outscoring its opponents 52-23 in the fourth quarter. Wednesday's win was highlighted by 53.8 percent shooting in the final period.

For the third consecutive time, the Cavs controlled the glass. In addition to Carey's game-high 17 boards, six other UVa-Wise players had at least three boards in the 51-28 walloping on the boards.

Senior point guard Taylor Sandidge registered her second consecutive double digit scoring performance. The Waynesboro, Va. product tallied 14 points while grabbing eight boards and dishing out five assists in the win.

As a team, UVa-Wise shot 80 percent (16-20) from the foul line while limiting Winston-Salem State to 10 free throw attempts.

Tiana Edwards led the Rams with 14 points while Brionna Pate grabbed six rebounds.

UVa-Wise begins Mountain East Conference play Saturday when the team visits the University of Charleston for a 2 p.m. tipoff. A win would give the Cavs its first three game winning streak since posting consecutive victories over Notre Dame College, the University of Pikeville and West Virginia Wesleyan during the early part of the 2013-14 season.
