Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise volleyball team was handed a 3-0 Mountain East Conference road loss Saturday morning in Buckhannon, West Virginia. The Cavaliers (3-18, 2-4 MEC) were defeated in three consecutive sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-16) by the homestanding Lady Bobcats (6-13, 2-4 MEC) and were kept to a .131 attack percentage.
The opening set proved to be the closest of the three sets as West Virginia Wesleyan swung at a mark of .214 for the match and registered double-digit kills in each set. The Lady Bobcats totaled 39 kills for the match, hit seven aces and made 80 digs, whereas UVa-Wise was only able to manage 30 kills and 66 total digs.
The Cavs hit a match-high 13 kills in the opening set and attacked at a percentage of .138 but West Virginia Wesleyan was even sharper and came back from a 17-15 deficit to take the set 25-23. The Lady Bobcats used the momentum to their advantage and raced out to a 10-2 advantage in set number two. UVa-Wise would never tie or retake the lead for the remainder of the match as West Virginia Wesleyan built its lead to 11 at 22-11 before claiming the second set 24-17. Once again in the third set the Lady Bobcats jumped out to an early lead but the Cavs fought their way back to get within four at 19-15. However, West Virginia Wesleyan put the match away when the Lady Bobcats won six of the final seven points, giving them the 25-16 third-set win.
Senior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker (Midlothian, Va.) led the Cavs in the match with a season-high nine kills and made two blocks. Senior outside hitters
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) and
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Va.) added six and five kills, respectively, while Anderson also served three aces and earned 13 digs. Freshman setter
Caitlynn Doss (Abingdon, Va.) assisted on 21 of the Cavs' 30 kills, while senior libero
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) collected a team-high 14 digs and Allen got to 10 digs of her own.
Stacie Baumann led the Lady Bobcats with a match-high 10 kills and 14 digs, while Paulina Nottingham dished out a match-high 28 assists, hit three service aces and made a block. Hannah King collected nine kills for West Virginia Wesleyan as Ebonie Hicks added eight more. The Lady Bobcats got a match-high 19 digs from Lexi Walsh and another 17 from Hannah Moore.
The Cavs will have five days off from competition before returning to action Thursday at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
