Box Score URBANA, Ohio – The UVa-Wise volleyball team was handed a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) Mountain East Conference road loss Friday night at Urbana University. The Cavaliers (3-20, 2-6 MEC) witnessed the host Blue Knights (10-11, 3-4) swing at a mark of .304 and hit 43 total kills in the match, while UVa-Wise was only able to hold an attack percentage of .152 and connect on 31 kills.
Urbana made 16 kills in each the second and third sets as the Blue Knights attacked at a .361 clip in the second and .444 in the third, in addition to recording six service aces and 45 digs. The Cavs tallied five service aces, made three total team blocks and earned 38 digs.
UVa-Wise's best chance to win a set was in the first where the Cavs made 13 kills and held an early 7-3 lead. That lead would be short lived as the Blue Knights came storming back to take a 15-10 advantage after a string of six consecutive points. The Cavs then won four-straight points to make it a one-point set at 15-14 before another Urbana run made it 20-16. The two teams split the next 10 points, giving the Blue Knights the 25-21 opening-set win.
After a 6-6 tie in the second set, Urbana won five of the next six points to take an 11-7 lead on the Cavs. A five-point run gave the Blue Knights a commanding 19-10 run before UVa-Wise won six of the following eight points to get within five at 21-16. However, it would be as close as the Cavs would get in the set as Urbana won the last four points for the 25-16 second-set win. Things did not go the way of UVa-Wise in the third set either with the Blue Knights jumping out to an early 7-1 advantage. A run of seven points gave Urbana a daunting 10-point, 17-7 lead which it extended to 11 at 22-11. The Cavs won five of the next six points to get within seven at 23-16, but that would be it as the Blue Knights claimed the next two points to clinch the match with a 25-16 set victory.
