Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – UVa-Wise volleyball was swept 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 28-26) by host Notre Dame College Thursday night in South Euclid, Ohio. The visiting Cavaliers (3-19, 2-5 MEC) were unable to claim any set in the Mountain East Conference loss as the Falcons (11-11, 4-3 MEC) swung at a clip of .240 for the match and collected 45 total kills.
UVa-Wise hit .211 for the match and posted 36 total kills but Notre Dame College hit 14 or more kills in each set and made five service aces. The Cavs got six total team blocks compared to just four by the Falcons.
After winning six out of seven points Notre Dame College took a 10-6 lead on UVa-Wise in the opening set, forcing the Cavs to use their first timeout. The Falcons continued to lead until UVa-Wise put together string of six consecutive point to go up 16-15. The two teams went back and forth until the score was knotted up at 22-all, from there Notre Dame College only gave up the next point before claiming the last three to win the set 25-23.
The Falcons raced out to a 14-5 lead in the second set before the Cavs inched closer to make it a four-point game at 19-15. However, that would be as close as UVa-Wise would get as Notre Dame College won six of the last eight points to take the set 25-17. The third set began with the Cavs grabbing an early 9-4 lead that was quickly cut down to one after a strong push by the Falcons. After six straight UVa-Wise points, the Cavs built their lead to 18-12. However, Notre Dame College chiseled away at the Cavs' advantage and got back to within one at 21-20. UVa-Wise held set point at 24-22 but were not able to close it out as the Falcons won three consecutive points to take the lead at 25-24. The Cavs had their second set point of the night at 26-25 but Notre Dame College once again went on a three-point run, this time claiming the set and the match at 28-26
Senior outside hitter
Karley Allen (Lanexa, Virginia) led the Cavs with a team-high 14 kills and five digs, while senior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore right side hitter
Amanda Auxier (Midlothian, Va.) each contributed six kills. Senior defensive specialist
Erin Anderson (Richmond, Va.) made eight digs and recorded three service aces as Tucker and Auxier tallied three blocks each. Freshman setter
Caitlynn Doss (Abingdon, Va.) assisted on 15 of the Cavs' 36 kills and freshman setter
Morgan Milligan (Bridgewater, Va.) assisted on another nine. Senior libero
Erin Lee (Fincastle, Va.) also had seven digs for UVa-Wise.
Melissa Maczuzak hit a match-high 16 kills to lead the Falcons, in addition to making eight digs and two blocks. Mary Kate McHugh registered 11 kills for Notre Dame College and Natalie Spadaro added seven more and three blocks. The Falcons got a match-high 38 assists from Tawny Flareau, while Ali Kaeberlein served up two aces and McHugh got to a match-high nine digs.
The Cavs continue their six-match road trip tomorrow evening at Urbana University. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Urbana, Ohio.
