Volleyball to Play in Davis & Elkins Tournament Over the Weekend

WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's volleyball team heads north to the Mountain State tomorrow to compete in the Davis & Elkins tournament Friday and Saturday in Elkins, West Virginia.

The Cavaliers (3-2) continue their nine-game stretch of matches away from home to begin the 2015 season as UVa-Wise faces Slippery Rock for the second Friday in a row at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Shippensburg Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday the Cavs will play tournament host Davis & Elkins at 11:30 a.m. before battling Bluefield State at 2 p.m.

Playing in their fifth match away from home in five days the Cavs were tripped up at Brevard College Tuesday night after a 3-1 start to the young season, which was the best start since the 2006 season.

The Cavs will be looking to rebound from the 3-0 loss to Brevard against the Rock Friday, and will also be seeking revenge after falling to Slippery Rock last Friday 3-1 at the Falcon Classic hosted by Pfeiffer University.

UVa-Wise enters this weekend's tournament having tallied 190 kills over five games played, averaging 11.9 kills per set and an attack percentage of .217. The Cavs have allowed 182 kills, 11.4 kills per set as opponents have recorded an attack percentage of .164.

The Cavs have recorded 177 assists through the first five games at 11.1 assists per set, while making 211 total digs with 13.2 per set. UVa-Wise has also dished in 32 aces in its first five games. Opponents have tallied 172 assists (10.8 per set) and 209 total digs at 13.1 per set thus far this season.

Junior outside hitter Karley Allen continues to lead the Cavs with 72 kills (4.5 per set) made and 56 digs (3.5 per set) recorded through five games. Freshman outside hitter Ciara Kain is off to a strong start to her college career having tallied 33 kills (2.54 per set), while junior middle blocker Lindsey Tucker leads in total blocks with 10 (0.63 per set). Junior libero Erin Lee has also done well on the defensive side, recording 43 digs (2.69 per set) over the five contests.

Slippery Rock enters the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record after winning the Falcon Classic last weekend. Shippensburg holds a 2-1 record and swept Davis & Elkins (3-0) last Friday as part of its Raider Classic. Davis & Elkins begins its own tournament holding a 0-4 record after going winless at Shippensburg's Raider Classic last weekend. Bluefield State enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-1 record after defeating West Virginia Tech and Livingstone College earlier this week.

Following the Davis & Elkins tournament, the Cavs will return to Wise for their home opener Thursday, Sept. 17. UVa-Wise will play host to former conference foe Milligan College for a "Throwback Thursday" night to be held at historic Greear Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. The match will feature free giveaways to fans and will be the first time Head Coach Kristen Salyer guides her team inside Greear, the gym she competed in during her playing career at the College. Admission to all UVa-Wise volleyball home games will be free for everybody this year.

Mountain East Conference play for the Cavs begins Tuesday, Sept. 22 at home versus the University of Charleston at 7 p.m.
