Box Score 2 WISE - - Glenville State used a three-run sixth inning to post a 6-3 win in the opener before scoring an 8-5 extra innings win in the finale as the Pioneers picked up a doubleheader sweep of UVa-Wise at Stallard Field Friday afternoon.
UVa-Wise (10-25, 9-16) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning of the opener when Tye Marshall's RBI single scored Ty Lighton. Lighton led off the inning with a base hit and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt.
Glenville State (13-24, 13-17) responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. Zach Sanford had an RBI groundout in the inning before Tyler Wiseman's two-RBI hit put the Pioneers in front 3-1.
The Cavaliers tied it with two runs in the home half of the inning as Jordan Olinger doubled and later scored on a run-scoring hit by Lighton. UVa-Wise tied the game on a double play ball.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Heath Swisher put Glenville Back in front at 4-3 before the Pioneers scored two more runs on a two-RBI single by Sanford in the sixth inning.
UVa-Wise would be unable to mount any rally over the final two innings as Glenville State claimed game one.
Justin Lewis had three hits for the Pioneers while Lighton registered three for UVa-Wise.
Game two saw the Pioneers strike for five runs in the first two innings before the Cavaliers mounted a comeback.
Matthew Wright singled in Dallas Smithers in the home second to cut the lead to 5-1. An inning later, Marshall hit his second three-run home run in as many days to cut the lead to a run.
Marshall tied the game in the fifth inning when his RBI sacrifice fly scored Austin Johnson.
The score would remain tied until extra innings when Glenville State scored three runs. UVa-Wise would get the tying run to the plate in the home half of the inning but would be unable to do any damage.
The same two teams will be back at it tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
