Cavs Ride Young Arms to Doubleheader Sweep of West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WISE - - Alex Javins fired a complete game five-hitter in a 4-1 UVa-Wise win in the opener before Wesley Thornton followed with a complete game four-hitter in a 5-1 triumph in the finale as the Cavaliers swept West Liberty Saturday afternoon.

Following a perfect top of the first by Javins, UVa-Wise (8-21, 7-13) got on the board in the home half of the inning when Bill Steven lined a two-out single to centerfield to plate Austin Johnson who doubled earlier in the inning.

West Liberty (16-11, 12-8) tied the game in the top of the second as back-to-back singles by Tim Hughes and Vincent Haddox put two on with nobody out.  The duo each moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Mirandy before Hughes scored on a base hit by Yale Hughes.

Javins would get out of the jam by striking out Taylor Snare for the second out before Hughes made the third out of the frame trying to steal second base.

The score would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Dickt blasted a one-out solo home run to straight away centerfield putting UVa-Wise in front 2-1.

The Hilltoppers would mount a threat in the top of the fifth when Snare reached first after being hit with a 2-0 pitch with one out.  Jarred Carranza then lined a single through the vacated right side of the infield on a hit and run.  Moving on the pitch, Snare tried to advance to third but right fielder Ty Lighton came up with the defensive play of the day when he gunned down Snare on a bang-bang play at third for the second out of the inning.

Lighton's stellar defensive work seemingly put Javins over the hump.  The sophomore right-hander did not allow another hit in the contest as just one West Liberty hitter reached base over the final two innings.

Tye Marshall gave Javins a pair of insurance runs in the home sixth when he had a two-out two-RBI single to right field to push the lead to 4-1.

Javins struck out eight while walking just one in his second complete game effort of the season. The Covington, Virginia native is now 2-1 on the year.

Thornton would find himself in trouble in the top of the first inning of game two.  The freshman hit D.J. Busby with the first pitch of the game and Anthony Pierro followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second.  Busby moved to third one hitter later on a deep fly out to Jordan Olinger giving Hughes a chance to plate the first run of the contest.

Hughes swung at the first pitch he saw hitting a sharp groundball to second which turned into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play.

After a scoreless home first and a perfect inning of work by Thornton, the Cavaliers went to work in the bottom of the second with two outs.

Dallas Smithers singled and stole second before Marshall picked up his third RBI of the day with a single to left field.

Marshall would move to second on the play on a fielding error and come around to score one batter later on an infield single by Olinger.

On the mound, Thornton was in the process of retiring 10 consecutive 'Toppers giving his offense ample time to play add-on.

UVa-Wise did just that in the home half of the fourth inning when Smithers again started a two-out rally. The left fielder singled on an 0-2 pitch and Marshall turned in his second quality at bat in a row with a walk to set the table for Olinger.

Behind 1-2 in the count, the centerfielder hammered a fastball to the right centerfield gap to score both runners giving the Cavs a 4-0 lead.

Vincent Haddox would put an end to Thornton's run in the fifth when he led off the inning with a solo homer cutting the lead to 4-1.

West Liberty would eventually load the bases in the inning only to see Pierro ground out sharply to first base to end the inning.

Steven got the run back for UVa-Wise in the home half of the inning when he singled to centerfield scoring Johnson.

Leading 5-1, Thornton matched Javins late game performance by not allowing a hit over the final two innings in giving the Cavs a 2-0 lead in the four-game series.

Thornton struck out four, walked two, and finished with just 80 pitches in the complete game victory. With the win, he improved his record to 2-1 on the season.

Smithers and Olinger each had two hits in game two, Smithers scored a pair of runs while Olinger knocked in three.

The same two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is slated for 1 pm.
