Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio - - Alex Javins tossed the first complete game of his career in a 3-1 game one victory before Ryan Dickt blasted two homeruns, including an opposite field three-run shot to aid UVa-Wise to a 7-1 game two victory over Urbana University Saturday.
The pair of victories snapped a 10-game losing streak to open the season for the Cavaliers (2-10, 2-4) who have now played 10 of their first 12 games away from home.
Senior shortstop Chaz Tanner continued his run of strong play in the doubleheader. The Fredericksburg, Virginia native doubled to lead off the contest before scoring one hitter later on an RBI double by freshman Brett Yates.
Tye Marshall gave UVa-Wise a 2-0 lead when his two-out single plated Yates, staking Javins to an early two-run advantage.
After retiring leadoff hitter Matt Paculan, Javins allowed back-to-back hits to D.J. Collins and Roman Gammell to get Urbana (5-6, 4-4) on the board.
Following Gammell's RBI double, Javins would settle in, retiring the next nine hitters that stepped to the plate.
With the score still at 2-1, the Blue Knights mounted a threat in the home half of the fourth inning. Bronson Marlett would work a one-out walk before Jordan Olinger would make a diving attempt at a fly ball off the bat of A.J. Finlay. It would be ruled that Olinger did not come up with the catch, however, the right fielder fired the ball into Tanner who was covering second base to record the second out of the inning.
Javins would wiggle out of the jam without retiring the next hitter as he picked Finlay off to send the game to the fifth inning with his club still in front 2-1.
The Cavaliers played add on in the fifth inning, Ty Lighton reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Tanner.
Freshman Matthew Wright would eventually score Lighton when he lined an opposite field two-out single on an 0-2 pitch.
Leading 3-1, Javins (7 ip, 4 hits, 3 k, 1 bb) would allow just two baserunners over the final three innings to record his first win of the year against no defeats.
Six different players would line a hit for UVa-Wise in the club's first win of the year, Tanner reached base twice in three plate appearances in the contest.
Game two saw both teams miss golden opportunities to get on the board in the first inning.
The Cavs would leave the bases loaded in the top of the frame before the Blue Knights put three runners on in the home half. UVa-Wise starter Wesley Thornton got out of trouble with a 5-3 double play and a strikeout.
From that point, the two hurlers matched zeros until the top of the fourth inning.
Dallas Smithers reached base for UVa-Wise on an one-out error, Nick Sturgill was then hit by the next pitch to put two on. Following an out, Lighton would be struck by a pitch to load the bases with two men out for Yates.
Yates came through again, this time with a two-RBI hit to right field giving the Cavs a 2-0 lead. Smart base running by Tanner would plate a third run when Bill Steven hit a slow roller to second base that required a barehanded effort. Tanner never broke stride and scored all the way from second base on the play.
Dickt then delivered the big blow in the inning when he belted his three-run homer to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.
Urbana would get a run back in the home half of the inning but a solo shot by Dickt in the seventh would get the run back.
On the mound, Chase Patrylak and Cody Jewell would toss three hitless innings of relief in support of Thornton. Thornton allowed three hits in four innings of work, he fanned five and walked three in his inaugural victory.
Yates joined Dickt with two hits while the pair combined to knock in six of UVa-Wise's seven runs.
The Cavs made some sparkling defensive plays throughout the day, including a line drive double play turned by Jewell who came in with two men on base and nobody out.
The same two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
