Box Score 2 WISE - - Lincoln Memorial spoiled UVa-Wise's home baseball opener with a doubleheader sweep of the Cavaliers at Stallard Field Wednesday afternoon. The Railsplitters posted a 12-0 win in the opener before holding off a late rally to claim a 10-9 win in the night cap.
LMU (14-10) lined 15 hits and scored in five of the seven innings in scoring the 12-run victory in the opener.
The Railsplitters' Scott Miller homered and doubled while Kyle Floyd and Logan Augustine each tallied three hits in the game one victory.
UVa-Wise (0-10) received two hits each from Brett Yates and Ty Lighton.
Jake Watkins earned the game one win on the mound by firing five innings of shutout ball. Watkins struck out four, walked one, and allowed six hits in improving to 2-0 on the year.
Game two saw LMU claim a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Wes Neiderland homered to lead off the game before Floyd and Augustine picked up RBI in the inning.
Neiderland belted a two-run homerun an inning later to push the Railsplitters lead to 5-0.
The visitors tacked on a sixth run on a Danny Valdez sacrifice fly before UVa-Wise mounted a comeback in the home fourth.
Bill Steven lined his second homer of the year, a two-run shot to cut the lead to 6-2. An inning later, Chaz Tanner and Yates had RBI hits to get the home team within two at 6-4.
LMU stretched its lead back out in the sixth when Eric Kalman had a two-RBI hit and Floyd blasted a two-run homerun.
Trailing 10-4, the Cavaliers would put up a valiant comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The first six hitters of the inning would reach base for UVa-Wise to cut the lead to 10-7 before a two-RBI base hit by Nick Sturgill cut the lead to 10-9 with one out in the frame and the tying run at third.
Ryan Burlison would get LMU out of trouble by inducing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to complete the sweep.
Yates lined three hits in the loss while Tanner and Steven each picked up a pair hits.
UVa-Wise will return to MEC play this weekend when the team visits Urbana for a four-game set.
