Rams Sweep Cavaliers in Baseball Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Shepherd University's offense picked up where it left on Sunday with a 19-run showing in a doubleheader Mountain East Conference sweep of UVa-Wise on Monday.  With the 6-3 and 13-2 victories, the Rams took all four games in the series, outscoring the Cavaliers 42-10 in the process.

Shepherd (10-2, 10-2) built a 6-0 lead over the first three innings of the opener. The Rams used three hits and a pair of errors by the Cavaliers to strike for three runs in the home first.

The score would remain 3-0 until Shepherd tacked on three more runs in the third frame.  Sam Crater delivered the big hit in the frame as he lined a two-RBI single to score Tre Porter and Dom Wyshinski.

UVa-Wise (0-8, 0-4) mounted a comeback bid in the fifth inning.  Bret Yates reached on an error to lead off the inning and after Chaz Tanner was hit by a pitch and Ty Lighton reached on a bunt single, the Cavaliers had the bases loaded with nobody out.   Bill Steven continued his impressive senior campaign with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-1.

Tye Marshall would draw a bases loaded walk before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jordan Olinger capped a three-run scoring inning.

UVa-Wise would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but Shepherd closer Brian Martin would come out of the bullpen to retire three consecutive hitters, two by strikeout, to end the threat and preserve the 6-3 win.

Steven had two hits in the loss, his fifth multi-hit game of the season while Jared Finch fired an inning and a third of scoreless relief out of the UVa-Wise bullpen.

Austin Hale earned his first victory of the season on the mound for Shepherd.  Hale allowed a pair of earned runs, struck out three and walked four in his 4.1 innings of work.

The game would be one of missed opportunities for Hank Banner's team.  UVa-Wise stranded 10 runners in the seven-inning affair, including leaving the bases loaded in the third inning.

Game two saw the Rams put the game out of reach in the first two innings.  Spencer Wolfe belted a two-run homer for Shepherd in the bottom of the first inning before the hosts erupted for six runs with two outs in the second inning.

Jonathan Sarty hit a three-run homer while Crater lined a two-RBI hit in the six run frame.

Ryan DIckt hit the first homerun of UVa-Wise career in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 8-1 before Shepherd's Matt Wilson tripled with the bases loaded to knock in three more runs for the Rams in the home portion of the frame.

Shepherd tallied 16 hits in the 13-run showing, four Rams had two or more hits, including three each by Wilson and Jacob Carney.

Dickt was the only Cav to finish with two hits as he went 2-2 in the contest.

Bryan DiRosario improved his record on the mound to 3-0 as he tossed five innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts.

UVa-Wise is scheduled to play its first home games of the season Wednesday when Lincoln Memorial University visits Stallard Field for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
