Volleyball Welcomes King University to Wise Wednesday

WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's volleyball team will attempt to win its eighth home game this season when the Cavaliers (14-10, 9-1 MEC) welcome non-conference opponent King University to the David J. Prior Convocation Center Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. first serve.

The Cavs return home after a three-match road trip last week where they went 2-1 and picked up a pair of Mountain East Conference road wins at West Virginia Wesleyan (3-1) and Glenville State (3-0). The win in Buckhannon, West Virginia, against the Lady Bobcats avenged the Cavs' only conference loss this season.

Winning four of its past five matches, UVa-Wise is looking to win its third-straight home game and 10th out of the past 11 matches in Wise spanning back to last year. In order to do so the Cavs will have to beat the Tornado (14-11, 8-4 Conference Carolinas), whom they have not beaten since the 2007 postseason.

UVa-Wise was swept by King last year in Bristol, Tennessee, after falling to the Tornado twice during the 2013 season. In the two teams' last meeting in Wise on Sept. 18 of 2013, the Cavs were edged 15-11 in the fifth set. The Cavs last win over the Tornado came on Nov. 17, 2007, when UVa-Wise came back from a two-set deficit to defeat then King College (3-2) in the NAIA Region XII Tournament.

This year UVa-Wise and King have played common opponents in Lees-McRae College, Milligan College, Concord University, University of Charleston, and Pfeiffer University. The Cavs defeated Lees-McRae 3-1 on the road while the Tornado swept Lees-McRae 3-0 both at home and away. UVa-Wise won its home opener against Milligan (3-0) as King also defeated Milligan 3-0 in Bristol. The Cavs were 3-1 winners over Concord in Wise and the Tornado defeated Concord 3-0 at home. Both UVa-Wise and King earned five-set home wins against Charleston. The Tornado took down Pfeiffer 3-0 on the road and at home, while the Cavs won by the same score at Pfeiffer.

UVa-Wise is hitting .197 this season and averaging 12.3 kills per set, 11.6 assists per set and 16 digs per set. Opponents have recorded an attack percentage of .164 on the Cavs this year and are averaging 11.8 kills per set, 11.1 assists per set and 15.4 digs per set.

Through 25 matches this season King has hit .196 with 12.3 kills per set, 11.3 assists per set and 14.6 digs per set. The Tornado are giving up 10.6 kills per set on the year as opponents have hit .175 and are averaging 9.6 assists per set and 14.9 digs per set.

Junior outside hitter Karley Allen will continue her outstanding season Wednesday after recording her 1,000th career dig this past Saturday at Glenville State. The Lanexa, Virginia (New Kent H.S.), native became the first Cav to ever reach the 1,000 career mark in both digs and kills. Having recorded 386 kills this season at 4.34 per set, Allen currently sits at fourth all-time in kills for the Cavs. She has also made 346 digs this year at 3.89 per set and is fourth on UVa-Wise's all-time digs list.

Freshman outside hitter Ciara Kain is off to a great start in her first collegiate year, averaging 2.46 kills per set with 192 kills already recorded this season. Freshman middle blocker Amanda Auxier has also contributed a lot to the Cavs offense in her first season, hitting 147 kills at 1.88 per set.

Both junior setter Erin Lee and junior defensive specialist Erin Anderson have been strongholds for the Cavs on defense. Lee has racked up 289 digs on the season (3.25 per set) while Anderson has made 237 digs at 3.39 per set.

In the assist department, freshman setter Chandler Rouse has stepped up to the occasion as she has totaled 815 assists (10.19 per set) in 20 match starts.

Lauren Willoughby and Ashleigh Manke lead King offensively as Willoughby has recorded 271 kills on the season (3.08 per set) and Manke has registered 234 kills at 3 per set. The Tornado are led on defense by Amy Serowski who has dug 343 attacks and is averaging 3.9 digs per set.
