WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's volleyball team will play two Mountain East Conference opponents inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center this weekend. The Cavaliers (10-9, 5-1 MEC) hosts Urbana University Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming Notre Dame College (Ohio) Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
UVa-Wise split a pair of non-conference matches Tuesday in Banner Elk, North Carolina, as part of a tri-match at Lees-McRae College. The Cavs rallied to defeat host Lees-McRae 3-1 despite losing the first set in the first match of the doubleheader. UVa-Wise was unable to overcome a two set deficit against Brevard College after forcing a fifth set, falling 3-2 to the Tornados in the second match of the day.
Last Saturday UVa-Wise's three-match win streak, undefeated start in MEC play and five consecutive wins at home to start the season was snapped by the visiting Lady Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan who earned a 3-0 win over the Cavs in Wise.
The Cavs enter this weekend's matches against the Blue Knights (7-11, 1-5 MEC) and the Falcons (2-14, 1-5 MEC) seeking their sixth win in league play. UVa-Wise's 5-1 start in conference play is its best start since joining the MEC in 2013.
UVa-Wise has cashed in on 891 kills this season and is averaging 12.5 kills per set with an attack percentage of .207. The Cavs have made 842 assists on the year (11.9 per set) and have recorded 1,121 digs this season (15.8 per set). UVa-Wise is currently third in the MEC in kills, hitting percentage and assists.
Opponents have tallied 856 kills on the Cavs through 19 matches, averaging 12.1 kills per set and an attack percentage of .183. Against UVa-Wise opponents have made 816 assists (11.5 per set) and 1,082 digs (15.2).
Junior outside hitter
Karley Allen continues to lead both the MEC and the Cavs this season in total kills (314) and kills per set (4.42), while making a league-leading 4.91 kills per set in MEC matches. The Lanexa, Virginia (New Kent H.S.) native, also leads UVa-Wise in digs with 270 on the year at 3.80 per set.
Freshman setter
Chandler Rouse leads the Cavs and is second in the league in total assists (639) and assists per set (10.31). Junior middle blocker
Lindsey Tucker will look to continue her outstanding play this year as she is sixth in MEC in hitting percentage (.310) and has registered the second-most kills for the Cavs (160). Freshman outside hitter
Ciara Kain is off to a great start to her collegiate career with 150 total kills (2.50 per set) through 19 matches.
Junior libero
Erin Lee has also been having a stellar year on the defensive side with 230 digs recorded this season at 3.24 per set.
Urbana University comes to Wise with its lone MEC win coming against Notre Dame College (3-0) on the road. The Blue Knights have dropped league matches at Wheeling Jesuit (3-0), at West Liberty (3-1), against Fairmont State (3-0), against Shepherd University (3-0) and at the University of Charleston (3-0).
Notre Dame College has suffered setbacks in conference action at Wheeling Jesuit (3-0), at West Liberty (3-2), versus Shepherd (3-0), against Fairmont State (3-2), and versus Urbana (3-0), while earning its only MEC win at West Virginia State (3-1). The Falcons will be playing at Concord University Friday evening before coming to Wise for Saturday's match.
