Volleyball to Play Doubleheader in North Carolina Tuesday

WISE, Va. – The UVa-Wise women's volleyball team will travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina, Tuesday after a three-match homestand to play a doubleheader against Lees-McRae College and Brevard College. The Cavaliers (9-8, 5-1 MEC) take part in the tri-match by taking on host Lees-McRae at 3 p.m. before facing Brevard College at 5 p.m.

The Cavs unblemished home record this season was tainted Saturday when the Lady Bobcats of West Virginia State defeated UVa-Wise 3-0. The loss Saturday also snapped a three-match win streak and ended the Cavs 5-0 start in Mountain East Conference play, their best start since entering the league in 2013.

UVa-Wise has won six of its last eight contests entering tomorrow's doubleheader. The Cavs are hitting .209 on the season with 778 total kills recorded this year, averaging 12.5 kills per set. Defensively, UVa-Wise has made 977 digs at 15.8 digs per set, while holding opponents to an attack percentage of .178.

Junior outside hitter Karley Allen looks to continue her superb play Tuesday as the Lanexa, Virginia (New Kent H.S.), native leads the MEC in almost every offensive category including total kills (276), total attacks (763), points per set (4.97), kills per set (4.45) and attacks per set (12.31). She ranks in the top 25 nationally in each of those categories as well.

Freshman setter Chandler Rouse is off to an excellent to begin her collegiate career, averaging a league second-best 10.15 assists per set in 13 match starts. Junior middle blocker Lindsey Tucker is also having a great season, leading the team in attack percentage with a .294 mark and recording the second-most kills on the team at 136.

Junior libero Erin Lee and junior defensive specialist Erin Anderson have both been strongholds for the team this season as Lee has made 197 digs on the year and Anderson 141 at 3.28 per set.

The Cavs will matchup against a Lees-McRae squad that is 1-2 at home and has lost six of its last eight matches. The Bobcats (4-13, 3-5 Conference Carolinas) have only played one common opponent in Pfeiffer University, who the Cavs defeated 3-0 on the road and Lees-McRae beat 3-1 away.

Lees-McRae is hitting just .119 on the season and averaging 10.89 kills per set, but has made 951 digs at 16.68 per set.

UVa-Wise will play a Brevard team that is 0-2 in neutral site matches but has been victories in four of its five previous outings. The Cavs were swept 3-0 by the Tornados (6-9, 5-6 South Atlantic Conference) back on Sept. 8 in Brevard, North Carolina.

Brevard is hitting .146 this season, averaging 11.7 kills per set while making 1,016 digs through 15 matches at 18.1 per set.

Following tomorrow's matches the Cavs will return to Wise and the David J. Prior Convocation Center Friday to play a pair of MEC matches over the weekend against Urbana University and Notre Dame College.
